Quota Relief for Vacation?

I loved this post on LI. Curious if anyone else in the WR gets quota relief when they take a vacation and how effective this is in keeping an engaged sales team.


I'm taking a week and a half off; my monthly paycheck will take a big hit. It makes me feel penalized for using our "Unlimited PTO" as it's intended.

I recently learned that Hubspot offers their salespeople quota relief when they take vacation.

Can we all just agree that this should 100% be the norm for all salespeople everywhere?

At their core - quotas and sales targets should be nothing more than a challenging, yet achievable goal that helps provide an individual sales rep with direction in their role.

We encounter problems with them when the intention behind them changes and are viewed by leadership as a tool to control human behaviour and impose obedience.

Sadly the latter is often the case and can be seen with vacation policies.

Any company touting "unlimited PTO" without offering quota relief is operating from a belief (whether they know it or not) that quota will keep salespeopleobedient and "keep the policy in check."

Salespeople aren't stupid - we know this.

Actions speak louder than words and offering your salespeople quota relief when they take vacation is one of the best ways to show your team that you TRUST them to be responsible adults.

In addition to building more trusting relationships, teams can also expect a boost in Mental Health and sales performance.

As Kevin Bailey taught me - feeling GUILTY is a verypowerful emotion that makes it incredibly difficult to recover from stress and use ourtime off to effectively recharge.

We can remove this feeling of guilt by offering quota relief so our salespeople can ACTUALLY come back feeling their best, so they can perform their best.

No, but it's rare that anyone is gone for more than a week at a time. If they did happen to take a long vacation it's not like they'd be put on a PIP for missing quota as long as it wasn't habitual.

I can see this being annoying if you were sold the idea of unlimited PTO though.

Gotcha, sounds like a good relationship with a manager can be all you need.

More annoying on my monthly payouts, it's a big opportunity cost to take a 1-2 week vacation, which most other departments will take 2-3 times a year without losing any expected earnings.

I always struggle with this as well. How am I supposed to perform if I take time off? How am I supposed to avoid burnout if I can't take time off?ย

VQR (vacation quota relief) is not what it seems. It's not automatic, and they don't have to approve it. That's all I'll say.

For my company you have to have hit quota the 3 previous months to take quota relief. Also quota relief means you are still expected to do 65% of a normal months effort even if you take off over half the month... so its a bit pointless in my book

I love this idea and love HubSpot after reading this - Yay HubSpot! We do not have quota relief for vacations. It sucks because you fall behind by even taking a week off - This means you aren't slinging deals and you aren't getting inbound leads....Anymore than a week off and you won't hit your quarterly quota. I can imagine it's even more stressful to take a week off if you have a monthly quota!
