Recommendations for starting an outbound team from scratch?

In my previous outbound SDR experience, I came from a big corporate company. I was asked to join a start-up and be the first outbound SDR they've had and help create that team for them along with a fellow coworker that started a couple months after myself.

Now five months into this journey, it feels like we keep running into one brick wall after another! We have seen a few successes but not enough to show that it's truly working. It's been tough to say the least, and any tips or tricks, especially in startups would be amazing! Thanks guys!

Qualifying question: Have you ever built something like this before?

i.e. from the ground up, no playbook and no one telling you how to do something

Good question, I haven't.

Probably why I feel extremely lost in all of this. I also had close to no onboarding, maybe a couple videos here and there but learned everything else on my own. Sometimes takes hours to get a response on a question I have or something I need, which was hard in the beginning but pretty used to it now!

Ok got it, and are you funded by any bigger investors? The reason I ask is that often times a VC firm will introduce teams from the same portfolio to help offer guidance and advice. You might have better luck going to a sales leader that has built an SDR team at a sister portfolio company than you will from following the guides you'll find online.

Do you know if you have good product market fit?

where is the process falling down compared to where you’re getting your successes?

do you know your ICP and TAM for sure?

lots to unpack my man

Personally I believe we do have a good product market fit, but I really don't think we're putting ourselves out there the way that we need to be. We target recruiting companies, especially ones that are just starting out. So we got some pretty big competitors with better price ranges and options for most recruiters just starting that can't afford much.

When we were seeing success was when we were going out and prospecting our own leads and qualifying them ourselves. My superior then wanted us to try other things and told is he would do it himself and kind of dropped the ball for weeks leaving us scrambling. Now we're doing zero prospecting of our own and seeing nothing and chasing old leads that were interested at some point but decided against us.

I think at this point I'm so close to feeling like I'm losing it and need to try more things because that's what I was brought on to do. Just haven't had any leeway to try a bunch of new things which is where I'm really struggling

Find people with hospitality experience. They are typically extroverts and have no problem engaging with someone they have never met before.
