Recommending the non-recommendable…?

I just got hired for a SaaS tech company as a BDR and a few of my current team are wanting to jump ship with me.

Guy 1 I'd take with me to war and back. Great work ethic. Worked hard for each job and promotion he's had. Would crush it as an SDR.

Guy 2...not so much. Bit of a silver spoon complex. Trust fund kid vibes, ya know?

But guy 2 asked for a recommendation.

How do I either A. politely decline or B. tel my new manager the truth without bashing guy 2? I don't wanna be seen as the guy who dumps on people.

Thoughts?

I've done this.... Girl I used to work with literally tried following me to THREE DIFFERENT companies.... I hit her with the "Send me your resume and i'll forward to HR"... HR calls me and asks about it, I tell HR she is a serial stalker and if they hired her should would live at my desk and kill the vibes... They interviewed her and turned her down. She followed up about the same job two months later...

Long story short, she has been blocked via all my communication channels. GET THE HINT LADY!

@RealPatrickBateman Hey, it's me your friend. You blocked me everywhere else so I had to find you on Bravado.
Can I get that referral now?

This is a “white lie that won’t hurt anyone” situation. Say you recommended him and it’s up to management now.

To agree with everyone else, how's he going to know what you said?   You can say you mentioned him to the manager. To the manager, you can tell him exactly what you mentioned above, and let him take it from there.

This was my thought, wasn’t sure if there was a better way (I’m a little new to this situation).

Hey, sometimes a recommendation just doesn’t work out, so he should never need to know you were lukewarm.

Be careful of a couple things:
(1) non-solicit.  Did you sign one?  If so, you shouldn't recommend anyone or anything
(2) slander.  If you provide a negative recommendation (or anything less than positive) and they find out (and its documented) you could be liable.

I would say "I highly recommend A over B, but neither are a completely bad choice".  Hopefully they get the nuisance.

Assuming the recommendation is not written, they only know what you tell them...
