Recruiters out in full force

Don’t get me wrong it’s always nice to be wanted but I’ve never had this many recruiters reach out to me for sales roles. I’m getting 2-3 messages a day for AE roles and I’ve never experienced this much of an influx before.

I’m close with my current manager and we were talking and he was saying that he can’t find AEs right now because nobody wants to do sales.

Curious if anyone else is also feeling the influx right now?

Your boss may not be wanting to pay what an AE is worth. There's a difference 😉

That’s a fair point, my current company is willing to pay up, it’s more so a lack of talent and younger talent doesn’t want to get into Sales.

Apparently! I just never thought sales people would be tough to come by. Then again it’s tough to find good people for any role.

Supply and demand is a hell of a thing. it’s kind of a job hunters market at the moment. Remember, recruiters are in sales too!

True story, how do you like MSP sales? I hated dealing with MSPs when I was in recruiting so I’m always curious how the salespeople there feel about it

Most MSP’s are really crappy organizations, and selling a crappy thing is never fun. I am blessed to work at what may be my regions “best” MSP so it’s not that bad.

I will tell you though that I think outsourced IT support services might be the hardest thing in the world to sell. Everyone says they do the same thing, and the client is totally uninterested in finding out why you cost twice as much.

I left MSP sales in Apr 2020 and I kind of miss how easy the “pain points” are to find, especially right now. Every CIO I know is looking to augment their team in some way especially to get Cybersecurity liability on someone else so the CEO can’t be pissy when there’s a breach. I, however, don’t miss the account management. I’ve never met a CIO that understood the metrics/expectations and you have to constantly fight to prove your worth. Selling to a team that doesn’t have ANY IT and is outsourcing 100% of their needs? F. THAT. They’re even worse because the CFO is always thinking you charge too much or are getting rich off them. “Buy a new firewall?! Nah this end of life POS is just fine. How dare you suggest otherwise. Also what are you doing to protect me from a breach?” 🤦🏻‍♀️

Believe it or not, account management at my company is one of the most sought after roles. A huge part of that is because We are so aggressive about chasing away the wrong client. It’s the only company I’ve ever Worked at where if your close ratio goes ABOVE 20% they start looking really closely at what you’re doing.

sounds like the holy-grail... the companies I worked for were more of "me too" MSPs (ie not their core competency) and were an absolute shit show. Literally go in trouble if we didn't schedule a 'strategy session' with our clients that the whole premise of the meeting was putting sticky notes on a wall that represented 'projects, wishes, and industry news'. These were 2 hour meetings with C-Suite...

Super valuable... amiright?

Oh my God, I would never put up with that. The really sad thing is when you see a prospect actively choose one of those “me too” MSP’s because they just don’t want to take the time to learn the difference. It just makes me sad. It’s like watching a toddler arrogantly give you the middle finger as he tries to climb an electric fence.

We’re seeing shortages in sales, ops, Dev, all across the board. We haven’t seen a ton of attrition and what we HAVE seen I’d be fairly confident tracing back to lack of balance due to the growing workload and difficulty hiring.

Side note( my profile pic is a tomahawk rib eye smoked and then grilled) seems to be a big problem in hiring across the board right now

That's interesting to hear. Sales is tough, but I would have thought people would be more willing to go for these roles given the pay.

There is a shortage of (Sales) Talent everywhere - I've been struggling to find real savages for my teams.

I feel like it's because of two things;
1. No one really wants to be in sales anymore.. (pussies, really..)
2. The abundance of funding; every organisation seems to be getting massive amounts of funding in the past year -> meaning they're all scaling their sales orgs

Agreed, we're growth stage startup right now with a small seed round so our budget are low and it's hard to get quality sales folk unless you pay. We're cash flow positive but I really think we should raise a pre series A.

I think the tide is changing, people are beginning to know their worth and want to be paid for their worth as well so, unless the wages are right it's gonna be hard to find people that wanna work for you!

I get a lot of recruiters as well, my favourite part is when some of them don't look at my actual LI profile and think I'm a software dev or PPC specialist rather than a sales person (I'm an ex-recruiter as well)

I must be doing Linkedin wrong, as I'm not getting hit up much by recruiters. Maybe since my title isn't AE?

Sounds like a classic case of underpaid employees with terrible benefits. Everything is opening up now, it's up to companies to keep themselves competitive to keep/attract top talent

Mid-Market AE
Lol, I added mid market to my LI title. My ACV dropped considerably in doing so. I was immediately hit up by recruiters with canned messages about how I'd be a great fit with MM experience (like 3 days into the title change)

Same here i just had a title change to Global Account Manager and already two recruiters reached out to me.

Im kinda ashamed that no company is willing to invest in internally for talent and they all want the plug and play type.
Justatitle

Which is also ironic because plug and play has a lower hit rate than internal promotion. at least in sales from my experience. to address the first comment it's apropos because its all just a title!!!

I’ve never had so many sales folks not interested is what I am offering. It really is a war for talent right now. I gotta say more than, “hop on this rocketship!” LOL

Thanks for weighing in here and yeah I can only imagine the competitive landscape right now. For me personally the rocketship line is a tired line FWIW. everyone says it and it holds no weight behind it because everyone that works for the company wants it to be a rocket ship and rightfully so. I'd get so much more value out of knowing what members of the sales team hit or exceeded their Quota QoQ and the promotions internally of the sales team moving up the ranks to show growth in the company

To be fair, I don’t use that line. I was just kidding. I USED to use it maybe 3 years ago but it’s overdone. We offer some of the highest OTEs I’ve seen and a large amount of options in a late stage funding company. I feel like we have it all but it’s a fight to get the passive talent.

We’ve lost a couple SDRs because they’re getting offers for $120k OTE. Tough in the streets right now.

Damn 120k as a BDR would have been so so awesome. My OTE as a BDR was 60k

Big influx right now, but if you're making good money and you're on a good run, with a good company, there is no reason to end that.

If your boss worries about having enough AE’s this is the moment to ask for a raise. You have the power.

You know what would make me listen to a recruitment message? Instead of only telling me OTE, tell me what percentage of your team is achieving it. Have your team be the ones recruiting, I wanna know the good AND the bad. I can deal with an outdated CRM, I can’t deal with “leadership always challenging us to be better” because I know what the fuck that means.
Justatitle

This, also BDR support and self sourced expectations. Every CRM sucks and every company has leadership that thinks sales could do better.

When you have your LinkedIn account set to "open to work" and recruiters reach out all the time do you take the mindset of "I need to sell myself for this role" OR "The recruiter needs to sell the role to myself?"
