Referring college friends to your company

I've referred a number of people from college who have ended up being solid in their roles, sales or not.

BUT

I've also had to tell a couple of people no when they asked me because you stake your reputation on someone, and if they end up ditching or not being a good employee it reflects poor on me.


Love these people as friends but maybe not as a professional colleague


Is that shitty of me to think?

Not at all. I'm also careful about who I put my name behind. Last thing I need is to lose cred at my company where I work my ass off because I referred someone who ended up being a total goomba.ย

I do the same thing. My reputation and my word of endorsement means a lot to me and I've worked hard to get there. If they are truly your friend they won't scatter just because you were honest with them.ย

I've been burned by this before. Ever since, I have been extremely selective. I will really only recommend a few, and that's it. Not worth ruining my reputation I worked hard to establish.ย

Mixing friends and business isn't always a good idea. It can be great, but it really depends on if that person is self-motivated and will not make choices that will reflect poorly on you.

I donโ€™t have a lot of college friends, moreso HS friends, and I wouldnโ€™t trust any of them with a Hot Lead Demo Request let alone cold calling, nurturing, etc.

only person I got into the company was my twin brother, didnโ€™t work out for him but now heโ€™s selling health insurance and actually understands / enjoys it; win-win I guess.ย

I refer everyone but I tell HR I vouch for this person or Iโ€™m just referring them to do them a solid but I wonโ€™t vouch for them. In my eyes, itโ€™s a win win for everyone. I help my friends out but I donโ€™t waste my HR teams time.

I've been approached by college friends who I wouldn't recommend, to put in a good word, you can easily say you did while passing on your honest opinion internally or not at all. It's a bit harsh but better than the alternative

Not at all. Your reputation is important, and if you don't have 100% confidence they'll be a good employee, no need to give them a referral. There's close friends I absolutely love that unless the stars aligned, I wouldn't refer them to my place fo work.ย

I donโ€™t have friends who I wouldnโ€™t refer to work with me. If somebody canโ€™t get his or her shit together for a job, I canโ€™t imagine that person is a positive in your life.
