Remote sales jobs while overseas?

Just curious if anyone has had experience with a remote sales job that didn’t give a shit if you work from Bali for example. Sure the time difference will be a bitch but generally speaking, anyone know of a company that doesn’t care? Most companies I’ve worked for tend to track that via your work equipment.. just curious if that’s the case everywhere

Most companies dont care to a certain extent.

If you are planning to work elsewhere for more than either 30 or 90 days (I cant remember the correct number) then you need to make sure your company has tax status in that country. If they dont, then you can only be there for a certain amount of time before it becomes illegal.

We have had to term people in the past for working over the alloted time in a country where we didnt have tax status and could no longer pay them legally if they were working in that country.

If your just talking shorter durations, get after it! Most remote companies dont care as long as youre getting your job done at a high level.

the call out on the tax status is really interesting. I would not have thought about that.

I know i have seen posts of people MOVING overseas and not telling the company.

Ya thats basically the issue we ran into. Someone moved and didnt tell us. Like 100 days later they told us and we had to let them go because they werent willing to move back and we could no longer pay them. Was a rough way to learn that intricacy.

Yeah that’s the obstacle that I’ve heard, the tax issue. Because then the company would be considered operating out of that country. It’s cool to know that there’s a grace period. I’ve also heard of applying to multi-national companies. Hopefully my next employer is cool with me being out of the country for 90 days a year. Sales is fun and rewarding but being stuck in a home office all day defeats the concept of working remotely lol. Digital nomads are living their best life right now

Ya for sure, and if youre in a spot in your life where you can be that flexible then by all means make it happen.

Just keep in mind its not really up to the employer haha. They either have the tax status or they dont and if they dont, they arent going to pursue it for one person lol.

The multinational route works well for sure and could make some of the time zone stuff easier.

Why did they tell y'all? Do you think y'all would've found out if they hadn't mentioned it?

They just said ya im going to stay here long term/dont plan on coming back to the US so at that point we have to put in a location change with HR so we are deducting US taxes properly based on the state you live in. At that point HR says no go, we dont have tax status there and they are being paid illegally basically.

At that point the employee either had to move back to the US or we had to let them go. We would have found out either way.

I've been in Mexico since I joined this org (Almost 2 months) I mentioned in the interview that I'm 50/50 between Mexico city and San Diego and they didn't seem to care.

Now I've acted as I'm in SD since i joined because they are just finding excuses to fire people so don't wanna give them one yet.

One thing though:
1. My org is a shit show and would never ever recommend anyone to join.

Forgot to mention, at my past company i told them that id move to texas in 6 months and they said it was cool.

They never had an issue with it. They probably didn't know about the tax issues mentioned below then.

The last few companies I've worked at don't care. We've had Work from Anywhere policies.

my first thought - depends on where you go, but think of the potential timezone issues

I work at a cybersecurity consulting firm. Our teams don't give a shit where in the world you are, as long as you are accessible and get your work done. Obv in sales you're at the mercy of your clients' schedules so take that for what it is. If you have Asian/Australian clients that'd be a big win for basing yourself in Bali.
