Remote vs. In office

Seeing some companies requiring their employees to return to the office. What are the best arguments for remote work and the best arguments for in office work?

I've been remote for more than 10 years.

I now work for a company HQ almost 2000 miles from my home, so heading for an office is right out.

I won't go back.

No commute (was 90 minutes each direction on average when I had to head in) means I'm not in my car but can be working much sooner and as a result, I'm more productive.

90 min each direction?? Wow I would fight someone if they made me go back to the office and drive that much

Yeah, I didn’t have to go in every day, but it was a grind. Public transit was worse. I used to laugh at the focus some people had at the time of working where you live, and why more people didn’t do it…and here I was, rolling my eyes. I had a job in my town, but our company was acquired and the office was closed. The acquiring company’s closest office, where we were assigned, was in the city. So in order to live where I work, I’d have to either quit my excellent job and find a new one in my smaller suburban town OR move. Yeah, right. Anyway, I am amused that with remote work, I will ALWAYS work where I live!

I just to drive 104 miles one way to work 6-7 days a week. But I was in restaurant management at that time. a little different.

Biggest benefits of work from home for me:
- more control over my time
- i can work HOW i want to work with out fear of people looking over my shoulder.
- the overall flexibility

The reasons i liked working in office:
- the energy of a bunch of people working hard was really fun to be around
-lunch with coworkers
- the ability to get Face time with leadership.
- sometimes it can be easier to collaborate.

For me i like working from home. If i was able to go HQ and meet up with everyone once a quarter or something that would be pretty cool too.

I have been doing it for 2 years now and almost forgot how it is to work from office. My productivity has improved plus I have great work life balance.

I enjoy work from home so much more, I am willing to give up the networking opportunities to going to the office. However, since there isn't an office near me, I would especially not want to move just to rub shoulders with VPs in the elevator

However, I would say for a new rep, going to the office would be better to learn the new processes and learn from some of the top reps in the office. I have started 2 roles fully remote, and the ramp up process takes a lot longer because asking questions takes a lot longer and you don't hear what other reps are doing

Once you are more season, remote should allow you to be more productive

That makes sense. Perhaps remote work is something that can be earned?

Or you get as a benefit to being experienced.

It does take discipline and learning how to manage your time. It could also be a huge challenge for someone just starting out and needing more support.

For sales, in office is not needed whatsoever. I'm not going to leave my comfy decked out office to go to some cubicle because they have free cereal, fruit, and a broke ass gym on site to put up the same exact numbers as I do now.

I manage a VERY large geographic territory. Being in an office doesn't help me - it hinders me. And I am very productive, sometimes, during non-working hours. Working from home is conducive to that schedule.

@joesomebody:Love the fact you're a sales recruiter and care enough to understand the pulse of the employee market. Do share it with the sales management for whichever firm you're recruiting/planning to.

There are studies that prove people on average are more efficient from home. All this return to office is about CEO’s who don’t understand what their employees do and middle managers who need to justify their jobs. I would love to have an office to go to when I want, but if someone requires me to come in (even one day a week) I don’t want it
