Remote work from abroad?

Hey WR!
What's your company policy like for employees wanting to leave North America and work remote from places like Barbados, Jamaica or anywhere like that?
I often hear that data residency laws dictate employees must stay in NA, but, if it's all Cloud based (SFDC) then the data is never really with you, no?
Winter is looming in Canada and what I wouldn't give to spend it in sun & sand😬

If you're doing it short term on a trip/vacation it's usually acceptable. If you're actually looking to permanently reside elsewhere, it can have tax and labor law implications for an employer so I find that many companies are not ok with it.

I would look at it differently. IF you are 100% remote, and IF you can 100% deliver the responsibilities of your role, do whatever you want.
.
It is always better to ask for forgiveness than for permission, don’t let anyone tell you different, because the timid will try.
.
Agree with Coups, don’t move away forever, but IMHO, if you can go somewhere for less than 6 weeks, and less than 3 timezones from where you’re based, you’ll probably be good to go as a rule. Nobody will know better unless you fuck it up.
.
Just make sure you investigate things like a quiet place to work, professional background you can work in front of, internet speed and quality, a way to make and receive calls at your usual phone number, local internet standards and VPNs just in case you need to use or access tools that are encrypted or locational, etc.
.
TLDR: do your research and make sure your decisions don’t have a negative impact on the business. Aside from that do quite literally whatever the fuck you want, shamelessly.

Those caveats are important, and with those in mind I agree with you @TheNegotiator. Definitely can't work for a hybrid role.

@funcoupons  had solid points as far as permanent residency goes, too easy to run afoul of the taxman without proper guidance.

Exactly.   Something to discover with your company and their requirements for employment.

I believe you have to work in a country where your company is tax compliant if you plan to be anywhere for more than 30 days. Companies usually need to have an office in the country to be tax compliant so if you are thinking longer term do your HW on this or you cant do it.

We had to let someone go at my last role because they moved to a country where we did not have tax status and was there for like 90 days. They wouldnt move back so had to let them go.

Teammate is in Florida for a month for just this reason, as long as the work doesn't suffer who cares.

No clue. I would be too chicken to try it anyway. 😆

If you keep the same address and don’t change any of the paperwork in your HR file then it’s fine - frowned upon but if you’re already remote who cares. Where things get fucky is insurance - company is not going to pay for your insurance abroad. Make sure you buy one in whatever country you’re in just in case something happens.

The only issue is taxes. I did it at the start of Covid and I’m still unsure if Belgium wants 50% of my salary.

No permanent residency for us as it's a gigantic pain in the ass but temporary is fine.

Thanks for the input everyone. I figure if I can stay visa free for 6 months in various countries (US & UK i.e), then primary residence would still be Canada and would still get taxed here. Will take up with HR at some point.

6 months before you have to legally disclose to HR that you moved, then they bump your pay based on location factor etc
