Removing the rose-tinted glasses

It's been nearly half a year with this company and while I still love my team and the product, there are bits and pieces driving me crazy.

Example:

My CEO either loves me or hates me because he keeps tapping me to lead projects that have nothing to do with my role (ie: marketing & events). My direct manager has had several conversations with him about letting me do my job instead of distracting me with these side projects (That i don't get compensated for).

Turns out, he's been creepin' on my calendar and thinks that if I'm not swamped with meetings then I'm not working.

I think it's ridiculous to have to fill my calendar with what i'm doing every moment of the day.

Any other savages' have micromanagers hovering?

Your micro manager wouldn't happen to be named Jeff now would he...?

I'd 100% be making up events to fill your calendar with.

'Follow up calls'
'prospecting'
'call block'ย
etc.

If that's the case sometimes it helps to block off prep time and focus time and all sorts of things like that on your calendar so it looks busier than it is. In reality you are doing those things anyway, so might as well block off that time if that's what they are looking at internally.ย

My concern is that he'll read those and then start asking about them. And if i'm not able to get to them, it's not a great look.ย

I did give that a go when I first found out about his calcreeps, but after a week or so, i got super overwhelmed with my own calendar that i ended up getting less work done.

My peeps can't see the details of my calendar, only that it's blocked.ย  ย I don't get challenged or asked about any of it.

This sounds really off, somehow.

Glad you've thought it through and tried it already. Doesn't sound like a positive situation then

MMM....they are trying to slide into your free times.ย ย

I have never understood the need to micromanage but have found it is typically do to some trust issues.ย  Not saying you are not working but your CEO probably has some underlying trust issues they need to get fixed and they are concerned they aren't getting an ROI on their investment in you (dumb).ย ย

You have to talk to the CEO. Might suck, might hurt your status if it doesnโ€™t go well but in my experience this wonโ€™t stop. You have to go to the CEO your self and try and talk it out.

Your CEO hates you. Otherwise, they'd let you do the job they hired you to do instead of treating you like a lackey.

How are you performing in your current role? Are you rocking it? If so, does your CEO know that, without a doubt?

Broadcasting more of the great work you're doing, if you are crushing it, would be a way to get managers off your back and let you keep doing what you're doing.

But, if your performance is not amazing on your key responsibilities, then I'd say it's fair enough if the CEO is trying to leverage more value out of you. (And perhaps explore having you pivot)

There is a simple solve for this. "What kind of bonus would I get for this?." Being a team player is great, but that respect has to flow both directions. If the CEO does not trust you enough to do your job, you need to ask to be compensated for doing the work for others.ย

Maybe I am salty because of my own experiences in the past, but I would rather have the rough conversation than be micromanaged. If he does not think you do you job, it is time to have a blunt and honest conversation to make sure you get the proper level of appreciation.ย

I think you should be straight up with the CEO. Hey, if you are going to ask me to do these projects that were not in my job description, I should be additionally compensated. If not, this is actually keeping me from doing the job I was hired for. Does the CEO do bullshit work for free? Probably not. They have equity. Unless you have some huge stake of equity, I would say that you need to stand up for yourself.
