Reps that change companies often

I often see lots of sales reps in the cybersecurity and software world on LinkedIn that have a consecutive string of jobs lasting 9 months, 1 year, 1.5 years, etc. Maybe they stay at one company for a longer period, say 4-5 years. But then it's back another string of 1 year long jobs.

Are these reps getting fired all the time? Are the successful reps more likely to be the ones you see with 3-5 year stints at each company on their resume?

Most likely theyre chasing money if they’ve been able to stay in sales, but the way I view it is they’re looking for a good company or manager fit. If you find someone that you trust as a leader, it’s hard to walk on that.

100% correct. If you find a good manager/product/company fit, you stay.

It’s going to be different for everyone. Sometimes it’s just people chasing money, sometimes it’s them getting fired. No way of really knowing unless you ask them

A recruiter at Google told me "Lateral movements are the new promotions." Another company might be willing to hire you for a next level up position today. Your current company probably has a (slow) promotion track for you with mandatory time in seat.

just moved from sales in one company for 10 years which in med device is unheard of, standard to jump from one company to the next every 2-3 years

Every 2-3 years I understand. That's a fair amount of time to build a pipeline, close some bigger deals, or ride a trend for whatever product is hot.

But I suspect these reps I see with continuous one year stints keep getting fired.

I did 1,5y company 1 7 months company 2 Now 1y at current company. Company 1 poached me with a great offer and it was a well know org. I hated it and had the worst manager. So i left. No gaps between companies can indicate that people were not fired.

I’d think it’d be really hard to sell all that much if I was only there for 9 months - 1 year
