Resume vs. LinkedIn Profile

Does your LinkedIn profile directly reflect your resume?

As a recruiter, I see a lot of people on LinkedIn leaving out roles that are on their official resume, and different titles as well.

I assume people do this to fluff up how they look to clients/prospects/customers; would I be correct in that assumption? Has that ever backfired for you when looking for a new job and your resume doesn't line up to what they saw on your LI?

I know a lot of resumes are similar in omissions and fluff, but as employment verifications are on the rise (at least in my industry), I'm curious if anyone has ever seen any ramifications - or really just any opinions/feedback on the situation as a whole.

LI same as Resume?

Yeah, I haven't had an up-to-date resume since like 2012. As a hiring manager for salespeople, I glance at resumes, but I pay more attention to someone's LinkedIn than their resume.ย

Interesting, I'm more of the opposite, to be honest. I essentially use LI to gauge my own interest in the candidate's profile and then ask for a resume from there.

LinkedIn is always the โ€œfirst impressionโ€ but they will still always ask for your resume.ย

Mine are essentially the same.ย

That's how I view it as well.

I put stuff on my resume that I wouldn't want my employer to see when I'm sending it out to jobs I'm applying for. there's also stuff on my resume (keywords, responsibilities I held) I want to highlight to whatever industry I'm applying to to make those positions I held shine.ย ย

agreed use my linkedin primarily for sales and it is very company facing. I don't really go into KPIs and things like I do on my resume. All of my titles, positions, and dates are correct though

My resume and LinkedIn donโ€™t match because of a string of 4 acquisitions or divestments over 5 years. Itโ€™s a been of a train wreck to follow.ย

Ahh I should've added an additional option for differences between LI & resume. Yeah, that sounds like a lot to follow, both on paper and in your career.

Itโ€™s funny, I have more or less no idea how to succinctly summarize it.ย

Yes that is too messy to glance on a LI profile.

As a recruiter do you think you make snap decisions faster viewing a LI profile or aย rรฉsumรฉ?

In regards to snap decisions, LI for sure, just able to see if it's in the realm of what I'm looking for. Then I'll ask for a resume, and dive deeper and read more into that. I'll take a look at a LI profile for 10-20 seconds, check out titles & companies, whereas I'll read a resume.

This makes me question if my titles are good enough on LI ๐Ÿ‘€

My jobs are similar but my resume had more revenue specific attainment that linkedin doesn't need to knowย

Fair enough, mineโ€™s similar in that regard. LinkedIn has all my experience but my resume is more specific.ย

Never. LinkedIn profiles are a different game which works on an attraction model. Your recommendations, endorsements, activities, skillset via posting etc make sure anyone who lands on your profile has a decent cta rate atleast 60-70%

If it's a copy paste of resume , then value add ain't there

High points on LinkedIN [numbers and achievements from past jobs along with a short description of what the company did] and only marketing-ey company stuff with the current gig so that it doesn't look like I'm actively on the market [even if I am].ย  Resume lines up with LinkedIN.ย ย

I keep my formal resume short because anything more than the past 4 years is irrelevant. I show everything on my LinkedIn, such as restaurant jobs, campaigns from 5+ years ago. Should I shorten it to match my resume?ย
