I was laid off during covid from a company. They have asked if I want to return now that things have improved. Would you go back? What questions would you ask before returning?
1) "What steps are you taking to ensure we are not laid off a second time?" 2) Did you enjoy the company prior to layoffs and have you found a role that you like in the meantime?

Loved the company before. I found a role I’m successful in but don’t love the company. The culture isn’t great and the benefits suck, but the commission is consistent.

If you loved the company, then it's possible to go back, but definitely ask the question PBC has up front. You need to be assured the same thing will not happen a second time. Do they have you in mind for the same role, or something else this time?

If the reason for the layoff was purely COVID I would not feel comfortable going back.

Preach. If my job was expendable once, why is it essential now?

Need to know what they are going to do to avoid major layoffs again in the future. And dig deep on that. If this is a smaller/less stable company you need to know what their run rate is looking like etc. Protect yourself from getting into this situation again.

I would expect a raise in comp at the minimum and potentially a promotion in exchange for going back. Otherwise that’s a no for me dog.

I won't back at all. If they can lay off one time, repeating the task won't be difficult

i was furloughed initially during covid then called back - which I happily did. But they did layoffs again a few months later
If you want to return to that company, do it. But only because you legit want to
Remember that they friendzoned you

If you do, be aggressive re:comp etc.

No. It's hard for me to imagine a scenario where this makes more sense than finding a good job elsewhere. There are seriously great companies out there still hiring. Sounds like you are a valuable employee and will have a relatively easy time getting hired elsewhere.
