Richard Head

let me set the scene: Mr. customer (let's call him "Richard Head" ๐Ÿ˜‰) asks for a quote 18 months ago. I (foolishly) agree and send it to him. The bastard proceeds to ghost me (yes, I now accept responsibility for this). I spent weeks and months doing the ghostbuster dance whilst I called and emailed, cursing my stupidity but I got over it, left him for dead and moved on (although I thought about making a vodoo doll).

Today one of Dickโ€™s biggest competitors posts on social media about 2 x 6 figure solutions they purchased from us. Dick emails me hours later asking for a quote for the same solution his competitor posted about on social media.

So, savages! Bear in mind that Dickโ€™s money is as good to me as anyone elseโ€™s. I have ideas about how to respond to Dickโ€™s email (and NONE of them involve sending a quote) but I want to hear how YOU would

react/respond to Dickโ€™s email!

Especially interested in CuriousFoxโ€™s input ๐Ÿ˜‰.ย

UPDATE: Richard & a colleague of his jumped on a video call with me. It seems there actually is legitimate interest. I will not be holding my breath but there is potential for a few 6 figure deals here.

Dick has to get on a call and discuss why he wants a quote, do a discovery call. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

I would 2nd this approach. Get him to give more details because "sorry mr. head, but to make you a quote I'll need to clarify a few things to ensure it's exactly what you need."

Iโ€™d give him a quote. tell him itโ€™s valid for 72hrs only or proforma a small charge for the quote, (letโ€™s call it an admin fee)๐Ÿ˜‚

I would like to get on a call with him to understand more about his interest before sending a quote. But I'll send a quote for sure.

I would send him a quote for $1 and then let him know that you charge $100 per word in your email responses at $50000 for the answer to every question he asks.ย

I don't plan on answering Dick's email because I risk coming off as extremely cocky. In my opinion emails are crap for conversing and best used as tools to confirm what was agreed.
I will call Dick to talk to him, updates will follow :)

Repeating what everyone else here says. No quote w o a call and be sure to remind him why now makes more sense than 18 months ago when you gave him a quote and he disappeared. Is he ready to move forward now with a deal, etc.

I ended up quoting him, but only because he had a new colleague whom I tied down to comitting to an answer by a certain date. Date came and went, they didn't buy anything but at least I wasn't left hanging. :)

As most said, I'd force him into a call for the quote.ย

Then I'd also put a task back on him following the call. "Tha ka for taking the time today, can you confirm XYZ is correct and I'll gladly get that quote together and send back over "ย

Got to get him engaged. If it's all about cost he's probably not a long-term customer. If he cares about the tools/service and it's solves problems he's facing today - no reason not to send a quote.ย

Like you said, his money is green and deposits the same as anyone else's

Like others said, get on a call and sus him out. If he refuses say the best you can offer is roughly OG quote +10% since you don't know his deliverables/support needed.

Do the needs analysis on him and then tell him his competitor got a deal by signing multi-year/multi-product agreements before the Q4 rush. Make him work for it.
