RIF?

CEO pinged me on slack today and asked to have a quick chat. Told me I was being let go due to “restructuring”. Mentioned 3X it’s not performance issue. I later got to know that one of my direct reporteees was being axed in another conference room at the same time, without my knowledge.

context: I started ROW sales function in this EdTECH saas startup, from scratch, as Founding AE, scaled from 200k ARR to $1.1mn ARR all by myself. I was top of leaderboard in quota not just in ROW, but also US. Last year, I also got the 4th biggest deal in the history of the company - a GIANT district from Canada - all by myself.

Once we gained enough momentum and had enough confidence, I was told to start hiring and build a team under me. In parallel, a counterpart was hired and the ROW world was divided in 2 halves with each head managing their own half of the world.

In the meeting today - I Wasn’t given any reason apart from “restructuring”.

I smiled, nodded and respectfully departed the office for the last time 30 mins later, with my head held High.

Within an hour, my team member received this message on slack from my counterpart (sales head of other region)

I am shocked beyond words. I’ve never been let go ever, and have been an ace performer throughout my 10 year SDR-Sales career. And especially in this company. I did things that nobody could’ve / would’ve imagines.

WTF happened?? And what should i do now?

At this point, I don’t want another job. I don’t wanna go back. I just want to know - WHY! Where do I go and who do u get my closure from?

Sorry bro. I was impressed with all the success you've had. Don't take it personal. Your accomplishments will help you find a new gig.

As a veteran at getting laid off here is my advice: move on.

They definitely found a way to save money and will smash this other person with more responsibility than they can handle.

Time for you to pick it up and find another desk to be successful at.

Not that it’s right but you’ve gotta see it from company perspective:

- you crushed and took the business to a completely different level revenue-wise
- you prob got paid a good sum of money doing so (early comp plans are usually pretty rich on the % pay out)
- company is somewhat stable, maybe not profitable, but you landed big customers for them which have some stickiness
- you cost the company a lot of money that would otherwise be spent on other shit/ profits
- you get axed, they figure they can get other to deliver even 50% of what you did for half the price

Doesn’t make it right but that’s def how they see it

@unclespacejam articulated this perfectly. I bet they also did not want to re-draw up your comp plan because management always HATES doing this for individual reps. Assuming you had a decent comp plan and you had stayed there for awhile, management probably looked at your commissions, and future business that had potential of coming in, and said "Yeah we cannot afford that."

Do not take it personally, and go kill it with one of their competitors.

Kind of buried the lede here. This is a classic example of “this ain’t personal just business”.

You did the goddamn job and clearly did it well. Full stop.

Like @LegacySales said, head to your biggest competitor and crush them. Grind their goddamn bones for bread. @oldcloser owns the fuckin playbook on this take a few notes from him

The first thing i did post packing my stuff and heading downstairs was looking at the competitors’ job openings.
BUT, Wouldn’t I be living a spiteful life going forward this way?

Not really. It’s a way to preserve the muscle you’ve built with your last company and hit the ground running much faster than starting over completely new

Just this. We all want to frolic in the wind, free of fear and resentment, and full of glee in our fantasy careers. But that’s not real. You had the skill. Now you have the experience to be in demand, and get it done elsewhere. And that’s what we do. We fucking get it done. You left sweat and blood on the floor at the old place. That’s what it takes. You’ll do it again. Go shove it up their ass and get paid.

Spiteful? How? You need a job. Your ex decided to part ways. You have a very solid track record, you know the space.
Get the new job, predictably succeed again, enjoy winning.

You remember in Christmas Vacation when they cut out bonuses. The justification was that it looked good on paper.

This is likely one of those scenarios. Looks good on paper, but is a completely idiotic move.

Reading this entire thread… what the war room is for. We take care of our own. Don’t know if this was @sahil ‘s intended purpose but this community is solid when shit like this happens. And it will happen again.

This truly sucks, you were killing it.

Load of BS, but you gotta push forward. Really stress the numbers you made and their impact - you'll find something new.

Sorry to hear that. Gone through that and no matter how hard you try to find the answer, you won’t get one. Take some rest, enjoy your time and restart.

You did nothing wrong brother, don’t put it on yourself. You killed it and probably made a lot of money.

They were just trying to cut cost where they could.

Keep the head held high, you’re a killer
