SAE bonus structure

I started as an SAE in January after being promoted from an AM role. They gave it to me as my only option, as they wanted to move the upsell function to CS.

3 other SAEs started at the same time as me. We have good bases (85-100k, I'm at 90) and they offered a quick start bonus program because we sell public sector so long cycles.

I was at a conference with another SAE last week and found out her bonus structure and mine are very different, and I've now confirmed all 3 of theirs are the same - I'm the odd man out.

One of the SAEs asked about the bonus during a team meeting and my VP swept it under the rug saying it was more of a 1-1 convo.

The structure is the same - 4 time-bound metrics. Mine are $2500 each, my colleagues are $5000. One of theirs was just to conplete the 90 day on-boarding. They had 6 months to source 5 leads themselves (we have a rigid validation process), I had 3 months to source 5 and 5 months to source 10.

I've spoken with 2 of the other SAEs and they both agree this is brutal management. Any tips for how to approach this with my VP? My first planned question is "what would you do in my situation if you found out your colleagues were getting compensated double for half the work?"

That’s a great question to hit your boss up with right out of the gate, if you want to guarantee you’re on his 💩 list. So if you go that route, be sure to post a follow up here about your view from the Unemployment line.

So your old job got phased out and you given a promotion in a company and industry you already know. That lets you hit the ground running. An advantage over your colleagues who I assume are coming in cold.

I don’t know your specifics on sourcing leads - how easy/hard it is. But I do know that there are probably higher expectations for you as you were an internal promotion, not an outside hire.

The 2500 vs 5000 is an issue, but you might have a higher base then them, you didn’t say.

Regardless, i wouldn’t start with what you stated above.

Well said. This would make you appear as petulant almost immediately, and this despite your claims holding some validity.

I’m genuinely curious how asking him what he would do in the same situation is childish. I’m trying to not be directly confrontational, I’m trying to communicate that I know about this difference in structure and I’m not okay with it.

It’s just bad optics, despite your claims being valid. I would wait a little bit. You’re in a thankless situation.

I agree with Randy. Petulant is the right word for it.

It doesn't come off as mature and professional, unfortunately. I will admit that your comp differences don't seem fair at all, but it seems to be a lose/lose situation.

They all have higher bases than me, so the bonus structure makes that gap even larger.

They all have very relevant experience and have worked selling to our industry for years (more than me in fact.

Can you elaborate why you think it’s such a bad question? I’m open to suggestions, I’m probably missing something but I really don’t see how it’s that offensive

Just approach the conversation from an organizational standpoint, don’t be confrontational and you’ll be fine

Honestly I feel like the damage is done in terms of being able to trust my VP has my back. But I think I can continue to work with him.

I don’t even know what’s reasonable in this situation. I’d say the starting point has to be to swap to their bonus structure retroactively.

If they say no…which they probably will based on employer logic…what will you do next?
