Sales and being a Parent

I’m curious to know who else here balances having kids and being in sales. I am about to be a first time dad in the next month or two (I am in my mid-20s) and I would appreciate any tips or advice as I am sure reality is going to swiftly hit me.

Did you have an increased focus on maximizing efficiency during the day so you can be more unplugged at night? You mastered doing your normal day-to-day while having had no sleep? Any suggestions/comments welcome.

I have four kids and a corporate wife who works more hours than I do.   Just remember that kids are resilient, don't let the pressures from other parents/etc. influence how you live your life.   Yes, you have to plan out your days better, and learn how to operate on minimal sleep, etc -- but I've found more often then not we put undue stress on ourselves as parents trying to live up to some bullshit expectations of the world around us.

Fellow new dad here as well
-You definitely need to make sure you maximize your "On time" and get shit done and can be present with the kids during your "Off time"
-Being a parent gives a new perspective on what's really important which I found makes work easier

Welcome to the club! I have a 15mo old and 1 on the way. Having a separate office on my property has been crucial. My family seems to think WFH = being AT home. Locking the door and having a "go away" sign has kept me sane. I miss the watercooler though.

We just had our first baby both of us work high pressure jobs. You adjust to little to no sleep and somehow adjust to the new norm. Pretty soon you will wonder what life was like pre-baby.

I have a 3y/o and a 1y/o.... MAKE TIME. Money is great, but lost time is invaluable.

I have a little dude who is almost 2 and here are a couple thoughts:

1) I agree with @fuzzy that too often WFH = I'm at home and available to do whatever needs to be done.  Setting time blocks for when you need to really be left alone is important - but just know that the first 3 months or so will be bananas. Just so much going on (at least that was my experience).

2) I purposely made sure that the first 6 weeks or so after little man was born was planned out to be lighter on deal flow & meetings in order to make sure I was able to adjust. I talked to my boss about it ahead of time and he was cool about it (he has older kids and I think he appreciated me thinking ahead and talking to him about it).

Maybe the best thing now is that when I'm having a shit day, I can pop downstairs, hang out with the dude, get some laughs and then get back to the grind.  I also foud that talking about being a new Dad helped with sales - everyone with kids can relate, so it's a great ice breaker.

Don't worry too much about the sleep thing. After a couple weeks your body will adjust and you reach a new normal. The days after client pints 100% hits harder though! haha

Strap in becuase it's a wild rde, but it's fun too! You'll crush it.

I am also a new dad...It makes it quite tough but you will eventually hit your groove with a new operating rhythm it just takes time to adjust.

Becoming a dad made me realize that although I want crush quotas and make tons of cash...its not everything in your world anymore and honestly it seems counterintuitive but it kind of takes the work pressure off when you see it that way...who knows, maybe that even results in better performance.

Just had number two in December, and it has been tough with everyone being at home and very little help but that’s more of COVID.

It’s going to be an adjustment, if you get time off take it.

Get ready for the ride. It's very rewarding to be a father more so than closing a deal (I know, crazy)]. There will be many sleepless nights but that stage does not last forever and your life will go back to the new "normal" eventually. I felt more drive to complete tasks before the end of the workday so I can spend more time with my family uninterrupted.
