Sales and the It Factor

Picture it. Small town USA. 2021.

I rolled out of bed. No bra. Bedhead. Grabbed an iced coffee and decided I'd go to the local donut shop. Why? It was early and I knew I wouldn't run into anyone.

The nice lady behind the counter barely speaks English. She was super excited that I used my phone to pay. How excited? She immediately ran outside to her van, comes back in, hands me her phone, and asked me to help her set up her Apple Wallet.

Ma'am my Adderall hasn't even kicked in.

So I wrote step by step instructions then made her click every step so she could set it up.

Disagree. World’s biggest introvert speaking. I hate people. I mean, I HATE people. . If I’m not being paid to interact, don’t talk to me, don’t message me, don’t even think about me. I’ll know. . I suck in long-term romantic relationships, though I’m generally well-reviewed in short ones. I have minimal friendships, and my fiends get, that they don’t get me, and are ok with it. . That said, when I’m being paid for it, when it’s my job to understand a specific component of human interaction; i.e. ‘why someone would buy this’ and ‘what’s the most they’d be willing to pay for it’…. Ain’t nobody ever going to be better than me at it.

In grocery stores, I get approached by very short people apologetically asking if I can reach things for them. They have to be very short - I'm 5'7" on a good day, so definitely not super tall myself. I guess I look like the kind of person who will take a risk and climb up the shelves for that last can of beans or heavy cream. I certainly don't look particularly agile, but maybe the risk-taking nature of my career shows even when I'm casually dressed and browsing the aisles?

Weird I woke up with a bra on(stuff got weird last night). But there is 100% the it factor. To define that factor: it’s about being able to feel like your getting your face punched in at each turn and not let it affect you, it is about putting on and exuding confidence to your prospects even when you got your VP staring you down for deals closing, it is about hating losing more than you love winning. The best sales people I know fit that criteria.
