Sales Coaches? Worth it?๐Ÿ‘€

Let's talk about "Sales Coaches/Mentors"... A waste of money? Or a strategic and valuable investment?

I'm at a point in my career where I'm looking to invest in sales coaching for my own professional development. Coaching or mentoring from someone OUTSIDE my work bubble.

I have AMAZING leaders and teammates who will always be willing to help as I grow. Still, I think there is a lot of potential for growth that is only possible by getting experiences and perspectives beyond your company.ย

What are your thoughts on personal sales coaches/mentors?ย

If you truly exhaust all internal resources and/or cannot find a solid mentor from your network, then consider the free or very low-cost options. A membership to JB Sales ( https://jbarrows.com/) is a solid personal investment.

I second this. Their snippets are way too practical and worthy to invest!

I've never paid for coaching. I usually rely on people within my org. In a pinch I'll go outside my org to former bosses or colleagues for advice.

Yes, this.ย  Actually, this is one of the best reasons to have LI.ย  ย It's a way to stay connected with exactly those people.ย  ย

I'd suggest taking a look at your own network and tapping it for possible mentors.

WASTE. Our company made the mistake of bringing on a "sales coach" lol let's just say it didn't work out

My company brought in Sandler training. Coach was a huge dbag and sessions became a running joke among the AEs.

The generic Sandler approach is a joke amongst the industry at this point. "We sell via a channel" -- Sandler consultant starts in on direct B2B sales and doesn't diverge...GOOD JOB, JOE!

Sales trainers are jokes. Look at most people trying to tell you how to sell, and most them will have less sales experience than yourself and obviously cut out of sales bc wasnโ€™t making the big bucks doing well or would have stuck it out.

Iโ€™ve thought about this as well. I was imvited to some zoom meetings where the sales coaches spoke and the info they added wasnt anything I already didnt know. I think if you look/search hard enough you can find the answers you need. But, if you didnt have the time Id say it is worth the money. But again, I didnโ€™t feel like dropping hundreds and thousands a month for help that i was finding in google searches eventually.

Weโ€™ve all heard the stories of reps that invest in outside sales coaches and classes, who turn into top performers.
I do believe that some certainly benefit from such training.
But Iโ€™d certainly recommend you build/nurture relationships with reps whoโ€™ve been in the game for years. Find one or two who you like, and ask them to be your mentor. Theyโ€™ll be able to teach you โ€œtheir waysโ€ and share tips for success.
Also - a good company and manager will invest in you and your career. Meaning that instead of paying someone else to get better, you get paid to get better ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Find one, don't hire one. ย Any sales coach worth their time will invest in you as much as you invest in them. ย

Remember that old saying those who canโ€™t do, teach? Well, if they were actually good at sales they would still be selling. not coaching
