Sales into Management

I have made it very clear that my goals at my company are to grow through the ranks (pipedream is the be the CEO). I have done well in sales at my company, going from inside, to field, to Key Accounts, all promotions here, in just 4 and half years. Before I got the Key Accounts promotion this year I had been offered both that and the Net New sales manager position. My VP said I would be a great fit for both but the Key Accounts would be a better step for my career.

Im wondering if any of you have gone this type of route and still ended up in Sr. Management.

Appreciate the help.

Hey, I crushed it last year as Key Account guy and was offered a VP role over one of our teams. So far its been the right choice.

Not everyone is meant to be a manager. Is that a true endgame goal for you--or do you want to be an IC that has leverage and influence throughout the organization?

Too many reps think that the ultimate mark of success is a VP title--but there are so many other paths that will provide fulfilling opportunities and responsibilities that won't force them to learn a skill set that they never wanted to learn in the first place.

I completely get that, I have been really succesful as an IC but I have so much more to offer. I believe that I am better set to lead and coach people. I have always been the "leader" but never compensated for it. I know the role Im in now will help me in the future, I just dont want to pigeon hole myself.

If you know that about yourself, then take steps to be successful as a KAM and work with your VP to start building a management skillset. Good to hear you're ready for the challenge.

If the VP says Key Accounts would be better for the career then that sounds like the move, but in general, I feel like have management experience is super important if you want to be a C.E.O

Yes. Depends on what and how you wish to perform on either of the roles
If you feel key accounts helps you pave way quicker, go ahead with it
End of the day, make sure learning is intact and so is momentum with workย
