Sales "pledge"

Hey forum,

Is it common to give the bad accounts to new reps just so that they can pay their dues to more senior AEs?

"yeah please close an ancient cleaning services company before we assign you a lucrative ecommerce shop that on crunchbase just raised 480m!!!"

Help me, they are dragging me through the trenches.

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
I have given accounts I knew would be more difficult or which would want more customer service post sale to newbies. Mostly because they weren’t worth my time since I was pursuing bigger/better stuff.

Blow it up
I've seen difficult and low-rev accounts being handed off to new reps before. Part of it is that it is good training in what a bad sale is, part is also likely due to the fact that losing that account to the rep making a mistake is not a huge loss. Final reason is no one likes to give up high-rev and easy accounts.

I always felt the need to prove myself in a new org, so it never bothered me.

I received a book, but that book was based on my territory not my tenure. This does seem odd.

Never heard of this, but honestly don’t hate it. Good opportunity to try out some techniques on a prospect
the company obviously doesn’t care about actually closing. Worst that happens is you either close it and get major bragging rights or you move on and don’t waste time on something you all recognize as a waste of time.

As long as you get paid on it great opportunity to learn, practice, understand different purchasing processes.

Many orgs give the plum territories/accounts to established reps. The new reps may get more difficult accounts or territories.

The seasoned reps are worth retaining; the company knows they will do a good job and will bring in every potential bit of revenue from their accounts. Yes, they're usually going to get the better accounts because the company knows they have a better than average chance of bringing the account in.

The new rep is still a bit of a mystery. And so needs to prove him- or her- self. It doesn't necessarily mean they need to close all this; the new reps need to have good practice, and prove they can be trusted with better accounts and territory.

I would consider it to be limited exposure. You get the experience as a new rep and you'll use that experience to build your reputation so that you can work larger deals. I wager this is the same for most orgs if you're starting off as an SDR or new AE. Totally different if you're hired as a high-level IC right off the bat.

That sounds counterproductive. The best thing you can do for a rookie seller is give them some low hanging fruit to gain confidence before throwing them into the deep end of the pool.

It's just the nature of the beast in the beginning. The new guy isn't going to get the best opportunities.

That's how it started for me too. I think they want us to 'toughen up'. It's unfair, true. But you gotta do what you gotta do.
