I thought I read they used the layoffs to get rid of low performers. I assume there are some areas of the business that is still growing and needing to hire

I saw someone post today they got hired at SF. I was like, '...interesting'. They had been trying to get in for a few years and now they are.
It can take a very long time to get into one of the big guys - there has to be the right opening at the right time and it helps if youโre already past the initial interviews.

so im not clicking you link but SFDC is SO big that they can lay ppl off in one department, but still need to hire in another. its not crazy to me.
Large tech companies never stop hiring, whatever the headline. Layoffs might come in one area, but you can bet others are growing. Even in the same product line, geographical differences in growth means they're almost always hiring. A competitor to SFDC for example just paused all their CRM hiring in the US, but APAC and MEA is growing like crazy.
Also, if you can get rid of some AE's, hire some BDR/SDR's at a lower price and have them do 50% of the job, that can well be worth it in their eyes.

Strange....I just spoke to a former colleague there yesterday who told me they are 100% doing more layoffs in the coming month, before the new year and he was certain he would be let go.
Does he know for sure itโs before the new year? Is your buddy in sales?
He is an account executive and he said the writing is on the wall from both his manager and their higher up... he is proactively applying elsewhere.

Many companies do layoffs while simultaneously hiring for roles. Although donโt expect a company who just did a ton of layoffs to move quickly on hiring people

There were a lot of low performers when I was at SF. And itโs extremely hard to get fired once youโre there. Also, it could have been firings from certain operating units. Ones that are growing still need talent.
