Same company different compensation options. What would you choose and why?

Friend of mine is interviewing with a company that has an interesting compensation offer.

Basically they offer a salary range where the higher the salary the lower % commissions you make per sale and the lower amount of equity you will receive and vice versa.

What compensation plan would you choose?

I'll take $1,200,000 annually with no equity and no commission. Deal.

Equity is garbage as a Sales Person.  Do not take the bait.  Unless you hit Snowflake, you're not making money.

W2 W2 W2 W2 W2 W2 W2.

Find a way to get the big W2 and build your own side hustles to get out if you're making some cash now.

If its a company that has really solid product market fit and most AE's are hitting, lets dance.

If thats not the case I probably wouldn't take the role there in the first place.

Is there any proof of success or is he the first sales hire? As long as there is some track record im taking the upside all day.

Fear is a great motivator haha

He is mid stage interviews right now. Said something about how they look set up to succeed but I asked if the mentioned anything about current success and was told that he was told it's too early to tell.

Interesting concept. If people pick higher base and lower commission is the offer rescinded? 😆

Oh shit, didn't even think about that. Might be a tactic to see who is willing to "invest in the success of the company"

Really comes down to how much do you back yourself?

Are you feeling lucky punk?

Are you ready to dance with the comission devil?

That's what I asked him. He is a middle ground dude but I told him there's more to gain if he pick a side. So I brought it to the WR to see which site most folks recommend.

IMO the higher the base they may keep you there for a year and then cut you pretty fast. Most startups will do lower base and “uncapped commission” which is bs and they blame it on putting more money back into the product/solution they are providing. I always ask the hiring manager what is the average OTE their reps make in year one and go from there.

I don't trust equity. I need to get paid for my work now.

As with everything, context is king here.  What the fuck are you talking about?  Selling dog food, selling door to door plant supplies, or riding the next Uber to the moon?

This could go both ways. I know someone who took zero salary and did only stock options at Snapchat and now she’s living on a yacht.
