Savages - any Veteran friendly companies out there hiring unique candidates?

Hey Yall

I have a dear friend who spent years in the military in counter intelligence - literally identifying, building relationships and alliances with people to bring top info back to our government.

After his many tours, he graduated from Columbia with a BA.

He is being turned down for Partnership/Strategic Alliances roles left and right, because he doesn't have "experience".

Please don't come at me with start at the bottom get an SDR job. The guy is a f*ucking hustler and has more relationship building skills than anyone I know (he dragged me along in an unrequited love story for 7 years, Notebook Style).

Do any of you know who would take a chance on a real class act with real life experience?

Thanks for the tag in @funcoupons, yes Iโ€™m a vet. Iโ€™d say like half our sales staff are vets, including the CRO and some other sales leaders. We have a few vets sprinkled throughout the rest of the company but the sales org is stacked with veterans, all super successful and many in their first sales gig. Our company has really doubled down on hiring vets for sales roles.ย

Trying to stay within the rules of not plugging companies and remaining anonymous. I can say that there are plenty of companies like mine who have this mindset.ย

Anyone have an idea of how to connect offline here without having to post company names and/or personal contact info publicly?

Might not be the answer you are looking for, but most positions that are posted as Partnership/Strategic Alliances are only looking to hire people to leverage their network. Our guy who runs Partnerships and Alliances came from what used to be the largest competitor in our industry and all he does is call people who sold at his last company

Real answer for you, one of our VPs was former Air Force and is always looking to recruit service members. I would search on Linkedin for people in higher roles that have a background in the armed services as well. They are a strong community.ย

Great advice on trolling LI for vets in management roles. You instantly have a connection and interesting background for a reach out, plus vets are likely to hire vets.ย

I don't know of anywhere, plus I'm in Canada but best of luck to your friend. I know it can be tough for veterans to find civilian jobs.

More start ups seem willing to hire based on personality/raw skills than large corporations, and I think a person with a military background would fit in really well in an entrepreneurial, hustler atmosphere so maybe start there?

@HarryCarayย Aren't you a veteran? Any advice for this person?ย

Government contractors, manufacturers, consultant groups, training groups and B2B companies who deal with any of the previous all should be jumping over themselves to hire vets with real-world skills and experience pertinent to their industry.

Gov't departments are also usually incentivized to hire vets, there are usually expedited hiring processes due to all the info already on file and programs to prioritize service-disabled vets. I'm talking purchasing, admin, R&D and PR orgs within all levels of gov't.

The hardest thing vets face is selling themselves as we always were taught/raised/believed that the service and unit came before ourselves. Officers usually better at selling themselves and their plans than enlisted, but I've seen all ranks find interviews hard. The next hardest thing is believing you qualify for a job and knowing how to translate your experiences into civilian context.

There should be lots of resources out there from transition groups, vet hiring firms and charities that can help. Some will help with resume building and interview prep, others are active job banks and try to match up skills with positions. it will depend on where your buddy is (USA or Canada) but I can make some recommendations. It still is a grind though, so he will need to prep for that.

If it wasn't COVID, I'd say hit the trade show circuit and meet some people. The defence community is very much a relationship, war story-swap kind of group and he is likely to find some good connections. Hope that stuff resumes in person soon.

I'm a veteran and my company, which I guess I'm not allowed to name, is very vet friendly and have had some major turnover on our partner & alliances team recently.ย

This is my first day so lmk how I could share the company.ย

Otherwise, Salesforce has a phenomenal vet and military community.ย

I don't know many by name, but there are lots of consulting roles that deal with government/military sectors specifically. I have to imagine companies that secure military contracts would also have a fit for him.ย

Tell him to look into Delta Defense LLC. They are a huge vet friendly company. A lot of the people that work there are vets. They have great values as a company and love to help their people succeed, and give them every tool in the industry to make it happen.ย ย
