Scummy Mgmt Philosophies

My manager wants to meet for lunch tomorrow. It's supposed to be to discuss business plan for the year. But it's really because he thinks talking to me face to face will convince me to enter a commission only plan. FYI. He even told me yesterday it was a requirement. But of course I have overwhelming evidence this is false.

Long story short.

Why are so many people in mgmt and higher just pure scum? Seriously? All that ability to be great and it's like everyone is consistently taking opportunities to be abysmal humans.

P.S. I was over 150% of goal last year. And am just hovering 33% of goal already. But we all know it's my fault as a salesperson.......๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„

FYI, I am looking for a new job. I am also using this role to find a real culture and identity fit with my next company.ย

It's going to be insanely hard, but finding people who don't think sales people make too much money, aren't trying to screw them with comp plans, aren't low balling their base salaries, and are just overall good people with strong product fit, support, and etc. That's all I have been looking for. Been getting disappointed a lot in the job search.

Where are you looking and in what industry? Surprising you keep running into shitty offers and scumbags with how how the market is.ย

I am looking back at direct software sales, remote only, no office, no customer facing, no meeting people in person for direct sales. I am currently in auto and work a territory, face to face sales. I took this job because COVID and I believed there was opportunity.....nope. Also reviewing some mgmt, revops, and/or product roles. My job outreach keeps improving weekly.

Could we get a bit more context please sir?

Long story short is that financially with this comp plan, I can easily make more than anyone on the commission plan, and I did compared to many last year. Easy to make the financial analysis off one bonus + a paycheck calculating taxes, expenses, etc. This aspect of our company is just cheap and does not want to invest. Not even 30% of sales people made goal last year....

And as I mentioned to another person....If you are on this plan,
the company would also not pay any expenses of any kind either. Mileage, car, phone, materials, etc. you name it.

So wait, you can make more on the comp plan but dont want to move to the comp plan? Just trying to get a clear picture of what we're talking about.ย

No, no, no. The plan I am on I have a nice salary and OTE can be decent with variables and etc. I can make more than many on the commission plan.ย

The plan they want me to move to by way of threats, etc, blah, blah, blegh, is the commission only plan. You have higher tiered commissions, but you get zero expenses/support and etc. So you are literally on your own. Those taxes really just kill you anyways. So it's not like you end up getting a ton extra in your pocket.

So, 100%, no expense write-off, what about benefits? Sounds like you're basically a 1099 employee at that point?

Basically.ย

Why would someone work for someone else for that?

This sounds garbage AF tbh and a MAJOR red flag. You're in Philly, there should be a solid job market around you. Start looking my friend, theres better out there for you.ย

So today you have base + commission for OTE, but the company no longer wants to pay you a base salary?ย  Is that accurate?

That is correct.ย

The company would also not pay any expenses of any kind either once on this plan. Mileage, car, phone, materials, etc. you name it.

Are they making this a mandatory plan, or is this an option?

And why the hard sell from management?ย  So they can avoid all your expenses and make you a 10-99?

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
So they want you to be a contractor essentially?
Some of the most successful sales people i know are 100% commission. So thatโ€™s not entirely bad. The way they are doing it though isnโ€™t good though. They shield be presenting it to all the sales people at once. It suggests they are going to a multi-tiered commission structure.

Yeah, they have a multi-tiered for commission only. Base + commission gets 1 tier of that. Which is just fine when you add up the expenses reimbursed, mileage, car stuff, etc. 1 dude made over 30k in expenses alone. Tax free. Who in their right mind would give that up willingly?

But this industry and the way the company markets, product fit etc, is very low/non existent compared to top competitors. Most people on the commission plan, if they are lucky, see 60Kish. Sorry not sorry, my dream is not 60K for commissions only. That's basic money..... And then of course there is the fact that quota attainment isn't even realized by 30% of people. I think this is also part of it. Company leadership sees low numbers, they know perfectly well what is attainable (don't they all....) and as a stopgap to financials, trying to get people on a plan that frees up company cash....well why not.

It really just comes down to I don't work for free. That's really the big gist of everything. My time is way too valuable to manage your business for free.

Update again:

Ugh, just listened on the phone to my sales mgr. trying to sell me on this commission plan idea, walking me through all the requirements just to get paid X. He even admitted it's your choice. Does that make me a great salesperson for leading him to say that???
