SDR Manager - On The Market - How to go about getting roles with hardly any closing experience.

My most recent company went into administration three weeks ago. Complete shock to everyone, I was the 'Head of SDR' brought on to build and scale an SDR team for outbound demand gen which they hadn't previously done before. For years, all they relied on was schmoozing clients etc. It was going really well, we had contracts drawn up to hire for our SDR team. Myself, CMO and Revops were doing demos, seeking clients, and before we could close, the company went under. We also had a sales team but for some reason they were disinterested in doing the new outbound B2B sales so we took it on.

Prior to that, I was an SDR manager at a software consultancy firm of which doing the 360 sales wasn't a viable option due to the specialism of the sale in which we had specialists to handle. The role hit it's peak so I moved on.

Prior to that I was a senior SDR and SDR etc.

I'm looking around in the market now and most roles for my skill set now require a form of closing as an expectation. I am more than capable as I have done bits and bobs previously but not enough to be able to quantify it. I'm finding it difficult to navigate this to hiring managers and on interviews.

Any advice?

I'm thinking I either take a pay cut from a managerial or head of position and take on an AE role where I can start over to get the closing experience or do I carry on looking and those that require are being silly? Haven't been in this position for a long time so maybe things have changed!

You've fallen into the SDR Manager trap, maybe @Gasty can provide some assistance.

I think that @TennisandSales is correct - you need to get closing experience ASAP, and a step back might be the only way to get to AE.

Thanks @jefe - makes sense, I'm going to see how the current opps role out and if not start looking into AE roles to get the experience. Never know, some may pay even more!

It's a good idea to keep your options open.

Also a good idea to upvote fellow Savages giving you their two cents :)

my suggestion would be to get closing experience as fast as possible. you may have to take a step back but i think the future is better as an AE vs an SDR manager

Absolutely with @TennisandSales on this one. As an SDR Manager there will always be a cap at your earning and your variable will be at the mercy of SDRs. While it's a decent option, as an AE your path to VP is easier.

As an SDR Manager, it's very tough to Manage AEs in the future but as an AE - > AE Manager, you can manage SDRs(directly or indirectly).

Thanks for this. Makes sense, I have always done outbound demand gen and taught people how to do it so can fill pipelines for AE/AD's easily. Do you think hiring managers would see this as bonus as I guess i'd already be a hunter and therefore would only need the actual closing part to be taught?

i think if you had closing experience they would see it as a bonus. but the MOST important thing is closing experience.

Markets tough really tough. Find a sales role ae, sdr etcโ€ฆ that is a good company and learn the close.

Definitely go the AE route! I've been in sales forever and still don't understand the SDR role... This may work for some companies but it's not a one size fits all. (SF started it) I may be old school but last I checked building relationships through trust matters. Handing off a buyer 3 times doesn't make sense in creating client longevity. An AE and CSM should work in tandem once the deal is done.
From a career standpoint, you're illustrating my point why this is a dead end role.... Great spot to cut your teeth; should be part of the AE gig though.

AEs.. How long did it take you in your previous position (BDR, AM, etc.) to get to a closing role?

Hiring managers, how much better does 3 years in an AE role look compared to 2?
