SDR Slump: What's your advice?

After a banner Q1, I've been stuck in a rut. My activity is up both dials and emails but my meetings are low. I only had one in April with nothing on the calendar for this month either.

The content of my cold call opener hasn't changed but I wonder if my confidence/tone is what's killing me. Just seems like I'm not getting the time of day.

I listened to my old calls where I set meetings and I'm trying to emulate that feeling but it just feels like I need to get one back on the board to build momentum.

What SALES GPT said:

According to some Bravado members, here are a few tips for getting out of a sales slump:

  • Realize that slumps do happen and don't give up. Keep at it and don't stop learning.
  • Take a break and go for a long walk or read a chapter of a book to recharge.
  • Practice the Mamba mentality - consistently grind and keep your mojo.
  • Detach from outcomes and focus on providing value to both your company and its clients.
  • Stay consistent to prevent burnout, but also take a break if needed.
  • Remember that sales is peaks and valleys, and know that this slump will pass.
  • Try different avenues and make more dials to build your pipeline back up.
  • Stay positive and remind yourself of past successes.
  • Ignore what happened before today and focus on a new perspective.
  • Use free time to prospect and revisit sales training.
  • Take some time off and unplug.
  • Set micro goals for each day.
  • Engage in physical activity away from work to recharge.
  • Journal your thoughts with positive affirmations.
  • Allow yourself a day of doing nothing to realize the importance of dopamine.

Most of these responses are from a few years back so here's my ask for you: how do you approach a slump?

Thanks savages,

All you need is 1 win to get you back on the saddle. The best thing to do after getting a sale (or meeting) is to go get another.

Mood is the keyword to me,all what you gotta do is to start your day early and fresh and have you FAV cup of coffee,as you are who you are nothing changed, as it's a mental game play you need to believe in yourself and that you're still the best performer as always.
And finally remember similar sits you had in the past and how you did manage to get through and for sure you'll be able to make it this time too!

Almost always for me my issue is tonality. Whenever I am on, my tonality is usually sharp and to the point - friendly, but not overly salesy. When I’m struggling, I usually am too friendly or my tone is super dark and I sound depressed. You could try tinkering with your tone to see if this is the issue.

Another issue could be that your pipeline is weak. Is the issue the number of pickups? If so, you probably need to go lead source.

Just a couple of thoughts - GL

Thanks for your thoughtful answer.

It could certainly be a lead source issue, I had the second least mobile credits used last month. Pair that with tone and it makes sense.

Take time away, which probably seems like the opposite thing to do, but taking a step back and taking a breath, doing something for yourself , can recharge those batteries for a drag push out of the slump.

You can get that one win. Go into your next call sequence with confidence. The calm confidence of someone who knows what they are doing (you do) and that your product has value for your prospect (it does). You’ve got this.

Here’s a stupid question - can you speak with voice coming out of your chest rather than throat?

Honestly I don’t think I have been speaking with my chest

I’m going to share one of the best TED talks I’ve seen in a while. You’re obviously not going to change your voice around in a day. My point is - it matters more than we think.

We keep fixating on content (the opening / the closing / the pitch / the value prop). And that’s important. But how you deliver your content on a cold call is equally important.

If someone with a voice like Morgan Freeman cold calls me tomorrow, and even starts speaking in dotharaki, I think I might talk back. Or at least try to.

TLDR: If you’ve mastered the content part of the cold call already, start working on things like tonality, modulation, voice pitch and confidence. Makes a lot of difference.

The bigger question here is how do you get away from redundant BDR duties and upskill yourself to an account manager or account executive

my VP has always been impressed with my double sided disco questions on calls. for our SMB accounts he wants me to start leading those initial disco calls. things are trending in the right direction I just need to break the ice and get back on track

This was a good start and lot's of valuable feedback, I imagine things are already getting better. But, something I try to suggest to my team is the small wins (activity wise) challenge themselves to find success in completing something that isn't a KPI.

Slumps are the worst, fun fact Derek Jeter wore a gold thong to break a slump one time. Although I'm not suggesting you wear a gold thong, I'm also not not saying try it out. On a serious note you likely aren't doing anything wrong, market is weird, keep on keeping on and some breaks will come your way.
