SDR to AE

Has anyone had experience being an SDR at one company and then getting a new job as an AE? If so, has that transition been hard or successful?

I went from BDR at a company selling hardware to AE at a SaaS company. Transition has been quite successful

Many times to move up, you need to move out.

Do you know if it’s often difficult to get a new position as an AE with your current role being an SDR?

It’s difficult compared to being an AE already however, typically quicker to move to a new company than wait to be promoted

The problem is that often you are only seen as fulfilling a particular role or a need within your current company. If you're happy with that - great. But most often, at least in the long term, you're not. So to move up, you need to move out.

I went from being a full cycle sales rep at one company for 7 years, to an SDR in a SaaS company then promoted to AE in 6 months.

I`d say easier to get promoted in smaller companies than bigger ones. One major difference that takes some time to get used to it is the pace of the actual work.

As an SDR or a full cycle sales rep there`s a lot going on, as an enterprise SaaS AE still a lot going on but the cycles can get ridiculously long.

From what I have heard from others, it is more difficult because you not only are learning to close, you are also learning an entire new product

I did this. I was an SDR and then found another company and applied to be an AE. Went through the process and got hired. Was successful.

I guess I'm one of the few that never started as a SDR/BDR.

Going through the job search as an SDR with 2 years of experience, it’s been extremely tough to get an interview without having closing experience. Like others have said, not only are you learning to close but learning an entirely new product.

yes. i did this. I was an SDR for 8 months then left and got an AE role at another company.

It was super successful and really launched my career.

In full disclosure, i was selling insurance and investments for 4 years prior.

Success doesn’t come without hard work. For me though there were some challenges initially but I enjoyed my time learning.

Me! BDR in one company to AE in another, Not a smooth transition but my ship sailed just about right eventually.
Keep an eye out for who and how you choose anyone to be your mentor. That's VERY important in this transition.
