SDRs and BDRs, does your manager advocate for you in front of sales and marketing?

More often than not, I've met with SDR and BDR leaders that are just happy having their guys do whatever sales and/or marketing will have them do.

I wasn't like that, and I got into trouble more than once. I know better now, and if I could give my old self an advice on this it would be compromise. We can work together with both sales and marketing (we rely on one of them and we serve the other after all) without having to suffer a despotic manager that is concerned about his or her reputation with other teams.

What's your experience here?

SDRs and BDRs, does your manager put up a fight when engaging sales and marketing?

Back in my BDR days, we were the revenue door, if we didn't produce leads, our AEs were too lazy to go out and do it themselves. Hell, our CEO stuck up for us when people got chirpy in all-hands meetings.

I had a VP like that, he would stand up for my team for sure. Some just get it!

When I did manage SDRs I made sure marketing knew we were sales first and that sales knew we were there to make them more successful and to let us do just that.

The fact of the matter is most SDR's want to be AE's and will end up with a distrust in marketing at some point or another (kidding, sort of)

Agreed, most of my SDRs ended up in sales actually!

Yup. I didn't even know what the hell an SDR or AE was when I first got my start. Wasn't long though that I knew sales was where I wanted to be and that the next logical step was AE.ย

You were smarter than me. It took me a couple of years to figure it out!

When I was an SDR our manager would go to bat for us for sure.

That's awesome! My first SDR manager was a total pushover, but my second one was very cool. She's the reason why I wanted to be a manager one day.

Iโ€™m lucky because at the fairly small startup Iโ€™m at, our manager, VP of Sales and Marketing, and CEO all gas up the SDR team regularly.

As an SDR, not letting the door close when I give my opener and ask for the meeting and then the prospect says โ€œNo Iโ€™m not interested, thanks *click*โ€.

Exactly. Or maintaining engagement enough to get a real objection other than โ€œIโ€™m not interestedโ€. Not interested in what? Is a question I would like to ask sometimes.
