As funny as this is, I've legit seen someone hired as a CMO with no formal marketing training. It was crash and burn for 9 months till they fired her..
We hired a 'VP of Marketing' who never worked as a marketing professional prior to the role...also got fired 10 months in. How, you ask? They announced our new CMO and that afternoon let the VP go.
