Selling in APAC vs Selling in other part of the world

Hi all,

Just curious if anyone here has sales experience across the globe?

Do you think there is a difference between selling in the APAC region and selling in other parts of the world?

I find prospects in the SEA regions are a lot cautious when they are dealing with cold calls than in the US.

SEA Region is pretty vast, and there are a lot of nuances which are different. IMO SEA would include APAC, and Indian Sub Continent. If you can let know the specific countries, maybe I can comment. I've sold to India, APAC and US. I consider myself qualified to share a few inputs! :)

I handled APAC (specifically China, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, S. Korea) for ~2 years. It definitely pays to learn the business cultures. Cold calling generally never worked for me, but long, well-thought out emails did.

I'm based in Singapore (where a lot of tech companies locate their APAC HQs) so I've had a fair bit of experience selling to APAC region from here.

Two cents' worth below~
Singapore, HK, ANZ: Modern and progressive, I'd say similar to US & Europe.
Malaysia & Indonesia: Traditional & slow, they definitely love a F2F meeting rather than a Zoom/Teams call.
Philippines: Mostly speak good English, super friendly and nice folks.
Korea: Very in tuned with latest technologies, relatively progressive, but again, language is also important here.
China: Be prepared for endless rounds of negotiation. A definite advantage if you can speak Mandarin but not a deal-breaker.

As seen from above, you can tell language and cultural nuances play a huge role in selling to APAC. Hence it's also quite common for orgs to hire reps in Singapore with different local language skills to penetrate these markets.

APAC is a lot more inbound focused from what I've noticed. I've worked for APAC for around 3 years now and both US HQ'd SaaS companies i've worked for have had inbound strategies for APAC.

SEA and cold calling might not be as effective as the US, so partner led events from the local vendors or having strategic partnerships in those countries where your partners have existing relationships with larger corporations may help you immensely

I wouldn’t paint the whole of APAC with a broad stroke of the brush. I’ve worked with APAC ex Japan, and there are a lot of nuances between the countries.

Every region is different. I've never sold into APAC really but I've supported a couple of teams there in the past. I can tell you right away that markets differ even within clusters there!
