Sharing info on ESOP with colleagues

I messed up today. I had a colleague/peer call me asking me about my comp and equity given that we are in similar situations and they are prepping for negotiation. This is something that I typically would never share.

For some reason I slipped and disclosed how many shares I was granted this year. What the hell do I do?

Yeah.. I mean do I let HR know that I disclosed it? Or just leave it as is?

What exactly would you hope to gain from ratting yourself out to HR?

If for whatever reason my colleague mentions that I told them what I got when they got far less, I feel like it could have bad implications from leadership I guess. Was thinking of being pro-active

It's unlikely that your colleague mentions you by name. And even if they did, what's HR going to do? Maybe they say "don't share that info in the future pls," but it's not like you're going to get fired. Either way, you can deal with it if IF it comes up...why throw yourself under the bus unnecessarily. It's none of HR's business what you and your colleagues talk about unless it's against company conduct/illegal.

I would stay away from the HR but there is a lesson learnt !

Is it against your company policy to share this info? If not, are you helping the other person?

There's no policy around this. Yes, helping the other person. We're relatively small (~200 people)

So what's the problem?

If you're not comfortable sharing this...don't share it next time lol.

Time to just sit back and relax man. Just chill. It’s not end of world. Think you are overthinking on this one. I get it.

Yeah, I wish more teammates were transparent with each other. You've done a good thing.

This is good for setting a benchmark for them, and will help in the future if they get more/hear about others getting more. Data points are needed to make informed decisions

Chalk this up as a lesson. Ask your colleague to keep it off the record and if they are gonna use it for negotiation to generalize as much as possible. Don’t tell anyone else.

You can’t go back in time…..I suppose you can feel bad about it and use it as a reminder. I never talk comp with colleagues, ever.

I would never expose share volume, but strike price isn't a big spill - it's actually useful to get a deeper understanding of trajectory too.
