Should I negotiate this offer?

Hey savages,

I received an offer after being on the hunt for a couple of months. This was my #1 option both in terms of the company and the compensation, I am very happy. It is the highest offer I heard while interviewing by a lot. (10%-20% higher base and 50%-100% higher commission). I asked and 3/3 are hitting quota. It is a small but growing team.

The company gave me a range of base and commission in the first interview. I had planned to negotiate if I were given anything other than the highest range they stated; I thought they were gonna offer something in the middle and I was gonna negotiate.

However, I didn't really plan for getting the highest offer (rookie mistake, I know), so, I accepted right away verbally and received a written offer.

I didn't negotiate anything at all.

Now, I am a bit annoyed at myself. I have always been the "If you don't ask you don't get" mindset. But, getting my #1 company with a great offer just made me forget about it for a second and was just too eager.

Finally, my question is. Should I ask for a higher base, commission, or signing bonus? I usually negotiate when I get the offer, so, I feel weird doing it after.

My concern is that I'd look like a bitch for not negotiating in the spot, or that it might look like I am just asking for more for the sake of it. But at the same time I am concerned I might have left money on the table.

I am honestly extremely happy with the offer. So, not sure what to do. The only thing that would annoy me is if I later find out with the team that I am getting paid less than the others.

What do the savages recommend?

EDIT: The offer doesn't have stock options. Could I mention I initially accepted thinking there were stock options but after learning there aren't, an increase in base would be better aligned with my expectations and long term goals? Of course while mentioning how excited i am for the role.

You’re kindve late on the negotiation there bud. I wouldn’t risk it

It has potential to put a bad taste in the mouth of the hiring manager. Agreeing to something, then backing out on your word, in order to try to get more money, isn't a good look. Besides, the very top end of the range was giving. Not sure what would be accomplished beyond that.

Exactly. Don't risk it unless they left out something egregious. And it sounds like the offer is generous.

Yep. I know I've seen a few posts in the WR about offers getting pulled when reps come back and try to renegotiate. Just not worth the risk for what? An extra $5k/year?

I had the same thought, that is why I didnt feel so good negotiating it. I accepted it and signed, didn't negotiate further

Totally, after taxes it'd just be around an extra $300 per month. lol. I accepted it

Agreed completely. If one of my new hires pulled this, depending on who and how good they were I would probably pull the offer

you have a comp plan you are excited about, at a company you are excited about.

Those are MASSIVE wins in the market right now.

Could you have gotten more? Maybe.

Dont all that matters is that your happy.

Usually I'm ALL about negotiation, but not here.

I think you made your bed and have to lie in it. But thankfully it sounds like a pretty damn comfy bed.

There is no end to this actually. If you're happy, why getting into self doubt? Making more money is always the goal but how much is too much, no one knows.

You like the company, package offered is decent - Don't question it too much. But if you really want it!! Then go for it. One should always negotiate, even if you're a little late. That's okay. Verbal confirmation doesn't mean shit but it definitely will hamper your bargaining power.

Congratulations though :D Best of luck :)

Yeah, I am very happy and I think there is not much I want, negotiating might get me an extra 5k, which would be $300 per month after taxes probably, haha. I decided to accept it as I was late and felt i was just negotiating for the sake of it.

Depends how elaborate the offer was. If it was only about pay, you might still have the opportunity to negotiate PTO etc., but thb, you can still frame it in a way where you say “I first want to show that I perform and deliver, we can anyways discuss the comp once I outperform"

Congrats, well done 🥳 be happy and don't try to over-optimize

If you are annoyed and it’s disturbing you might want to ask. You also mentioned this is the highest offer you got, not satisfied?

Most of the time I’d say yes. If they gave you the high end and didn’t screw around with you. They clearly want you and don’t have concerns on your negotiating ability. In this case I say no

I could see both sides, but negotiating just to negotiate might have backfired.

We all know about deceptive hiring practices with efforts to low-ball candidates given current job market. The fact they stepped up and offered you the higher range without any games / tricks, speaks volumes about the culture and most likely, indicates they will be receptive to discuss comp increases in the future and aim to be in line / above market. I also think it goes both ways too...if you've landed the role you wanted, with the target company and received a significantly improved package compared to previously, then it's a win-win and so nothing wrong with a quick / seamless acceptance of the offer...without negotiating for the sake of just doing so / optics.....
I tend to think about the risk vs reward....they were transparent up front on pay scales (and you got the higher end) so how much further flexibility do they have....pushing it further 'might' get you a marginal increase...but at what potential cost.....could it create a red flag....likely not but worth the risk?...be a little different if no acceptance had already been given...then sure, negotiate / test the water to squeeze some more but you're after the fact now which complicates things and increases risk.

Yeah, those hiring practices are what make me wary lol. But they seemed like straight shooters and was referred for the role by an executive so I think they are being straight forward about it. Ill focus on outperforming now to position myself for a raise/promotion in 12 months as you mentioned. Thank you.

I don't have to read this and say "yes". Negotiate everything, even if you're asking for something so minute and dumb. It shows how you'll experience the org before you join it. Especially if they are open to meeting you halfway or giving you what you need.

Good point. My concern is I didn't negotiate when I got it and verbally accepted, now I got it in writing and feel im gonna look bad for not negotiating right away and waiting until getting it in writing to do so. Plus the offer is great.
What do you think? Still same answer? haha

I often get the verbal, make a soft commit based on the official offer, and the negotiate when I get the full scoop.

Very similar situation (except I didn’t receive the highest end of the range) and then found out no one’s pay was bumped upon negotiating. Might just be the case for your new org. Don’t let this strip of you of the joy of the offer

At this point, it checks all the boxes. And you verbally said yes, where negotiating now can cause some issues.
seems like you are happy, dont get greedy this late

Negative, you missed the window and they might pull the offer altogether. Sometimes its related to money but I've also seen offers rescinded due to unreasonable sudden asks when terms have been discussed and secured.

Had this happen to me. Had an offer come in higher than the range. Accepted immediately without negotiation - even though it drove me crazy to not ask for anything else. Prob means they wanted to make sure you accepted the offer. Nice work. Be happy and go crush it!

They want you to negotiate, but at this point no promises, especially once they sense you're excited about the offer.
