Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Currently around 8 months into a closing role at my company and have been a top performer since. Our pay currently has no commission but 100k base. Recently, a lot of the other reps that I typically compete against have junped ship for opportunities with higher OTE.

I have struggled with wanting to acheive more in my current role because there is no incentive to excessively exceed quota because of delayed promotions and no commish. My question for the experienced reps hereis: Should I be looking to jump ship for other high paying SMB type roles or should I stick it out in hopes of capitalizing on loss of competition?

It really depends on what you are wanting. If you want to earn more than 100k, then yes, start looking. If you are looking to add Manager to your title/resume, then stay. What do YOU want?

i would at least LOOK

$100k base is no joke. but there is for sure more money to be made if you have commission.

if you go somewhere else, i would expect to get offers that are a lower base than $100K so you will have to work hard to find a role with a $100k base but its not impossible.

if you can find a role with a $100k base plus commission i would jump of course.

I agree with this, I think ultimate concern is that right now I am looking at a potential 20k bump, just not sure if/when that should be happening. I likely will hold for another year-ish for the experience so that I can make a bigger jump into Mid-Market assuming I continue with current successes.

It doesn't hurt to look around in the meantime and see what else might be out there. You don't have to take another job if you find you'd prefer to stay, but you may find something that would provide more now without having to wait.

100% going out and seeing what is out there is never a bad idea.

What are you selling with no commission?

Heathcare Tech. Yearly subscription plus merchant processing, so deal sizes fluctuate immensely solely due to a practice’s specialty and patient volume. They used to have commission but did away with it and essentially doubled everyone’s base.

$100K is nothing to shake a stick at.

But what company doesn't pay commission?! I can't imagine you're the only one with this struggle. How do they incentivize success?

Are they any year end bonuses or is it solely base?

Is the end goal to be a manager? Because your current role seems to be the easiest route

No year end bonuses, currently up for promotion with plenty of others ahead of me to also be promoted. End goal is enterprise selling and closing big deals. Other end goal is more money of course.

If your goal is to make more money then it wouldn't hurt to keep your options open. However, wanting to achieve more doesn't always have to correlate with compensation. The professional experience you are gaining in this role even without the bonus incentive is enough to push you far into your career. That said, compensation shouldn't be the only reason you want to achieve more for yourself. Professional development and experience are just as important as your pay especially when a dire financial need arises later on down the road. I can't speak about your financial situation but if you're learning what you need to in this role and proving yourself professionally, the higher OTE should come easily in the near future. Overall, this situation will most certainly be a learning lesson in terms of negotiating salaries when you do find it extremely necessary to move on.

The no commission would have me to hell and gone. However, if you think this company could turn into a huge success. Discuss getting shares as compensation for surpassing quota.

Lately, I've been thinking about the same conversation. I have been crushing it and I can see a potential comp plan change in the future as a result. If I stand to make less for the same performance, I'm going to ask for equity to make up for the loss in commission.

No variable compensation?

Where's the incentive? Why be in sales (or with that company) if you can't hit it out of the park and make some really$$?!

Start looking, but have a well thought out explanation for why you're looking to leave at only 8 months.

If you just come out with, I'm looking to earn commission, they might ask "why did you take a job that only offers a base then?"
