Should I stay or should I go?

I've been with my company almost going on 2 years and in my current role for over a year. I've been very successful and have consistently been one of the top reps.

We hired someone new 3 months ago and they've come in and done very well. Our performance has been very similar. I've heard through the grape vine that she's going to be promoted before me.

It seems like this could be an optics thing or maybe even because she's friends with the COO of the company. There's little experience on her end and it seems like a slap in the face to me.

I've been approached by some very attractive opportunities outside of the org but I want to stay and keep growing with my current company. It also seems that if this is how it's going to be, I should take off.

Any advice would be helpful!

Dude focus on yourself and not in the background. The more you are away from the noise, the better you will perform and your hard work will pay off.

You’re right. It’s best to just focus on myself and everything else will work itself out.

I wouldn’t make any decisions based off of rumors. Also, as hard as it may be to hear, they may just see some qualities in her that would make her better for that position than you. If she does get promoted over you, ask your manager why she was chosen over you and see what areas you’re able to improve in. Take it as a way to grow.

That must be difficult to hear, but focus on your own hard work and try not to be distracted. If it does come to pass, connecting with your manager, as others have said, is a good way to find out if there’s anything you can do moving forward to make yourself a good candidate for promotion.
Out of curiosity, what does a promotion look like at your org? Management? Is it something you want?

It will be a player/coach role which is something I really enjoy. It's something that I've been working towards since I started here.

I’m not going to quit based off of rumors, but wondering if I should consider leaving. I want to be prepared for if this does happen.

Totally agree. It's not that I'm rooting against anyone's success, it's just something that I (and others that have spoken to me about this) believe is earned.

Focus on yourself and do what’s best for you. Don’t live in a small silo of office politics.
If the opportunities are that great, pursue them. Otherwise just do your job and make sure they know your goals and vision.

What else is at play? Beyond performance? How are the politics of the office?

This move is definitely because of politics. The team is lacking female leadership and I believe that's why this move will be made. It's not performance based.

Is there any way you can just keep your head down and stick it out? If that'll be rough for you and you won't be able to close your biz I say bail. But always better to add as many months onto your LI/resume as possible before moving on

You should work on your relationships at work. Promotions are rarely based solely on work performance. Its always based on work performance and work politics.
Example] If I have two workers with equal performance but I’m friends with one I’m choosing the one I have a relationship with, it’s human nature.

I’m not sure this is the issue. I have great relationships with my coworkers and leadership. In our org, promotions aren’t always given on merit and solely on optics. It’s tough to compete with someone who is best friends with with COO/founder of the company.

Few questions:

1.) are they aware that you want this promotion?

2.) Are your sources reliable or is it really more speculation

I wouldn't make any decision unless you confirm you aren't next in line for a promotion

If you work where I think you work (the scenario sounds EXTREMELY familiar to me in that I’m pretty sure I used to work there) you should 100% get out…
