Should I stay or should I go?

Hey guys I've recently accepted an offer for a enterprise sdr position making 70k base and 95k ote. They said I would have an opportunity to move to enterprise AE after 2 years as an sdr. My question is should I stay with the company until I can move up to that enterprise AE position or jump ship if there are opportunities from other companies for smb or mid market AE roles knocking on the door?

Hard to say when you haven't started at new company yet.

No one here has a crystal ball, unfortunately.

If the new co is great, you're happy, and there is a legit path to AE in 2 years then you can stay.

In most cases it's easier to make the move from SDR to AE internally versus externally.

If you put in 12-18 months as an SDR and find an opp to become and AE outside, you can entertain it.

Biggest piece of advice is don't move laterally from SDR to SDR. You'll up starting your AE clock over.

Congrats on the new role! As a former Austinite I can attest there is ample opportunity there.

Yep. Don’t move laterally in SDR roles chasing minimal pay bumps

Yea that’s literally what I just did. My last sdr gig which I was at for 4 months payed me a base of 50k and ote of 75k and made the switch for the 20k pay bump and placement for a possible enterprise ae role in 2 years. I think that was a good move but I guess time will let’s us know.

Don't do it again! Unless your company is a toxic titanic don't move again until it's for an AE role.

OK, so none of these things have happened yet.  Why not get started at the company, learn all you can, and see how it goes?

I guess I like to pre plan everything in advance ya know? But I’m definitely gonna bust ass and do the best I can and hopefully get that jump to enterprise AE. I’ve never sold before and I’m 5 months into my sales career but I’ve heard that’s where the money is at.

Focus on the job at hand. Get really good out prospecting b/c it'll help you throughout your career.

Find AEs who you can shadow, but don't let it distract you from job 1 -- booking meetings.

As for the career path, very few people go from SDR to Enterprise AE in 2 years. There is so much to learn about sales outside of SDR functions and Enterprise isn't a great proving ground.

Most people move from SDR to SMB or Mid-Market sales b/c it affords them more "at bats". That way when they inevitably fuck up (we all do) they've got a plethora of other accounts to pursue. You lose that luxury in Enterprise b/c there are fewer selling opportunities.

Do you want to do enterprise? Have you sold before?
Are you happy making 95K where you live?
If it's somewhere you're learning, growing, and creating opportunity for the future (without getting screwed out of money) then you have a great spot.

If you start to lack in these areas then reassess and keep a long-term plan in mind.

I’ve just heard that’s where the money is at so that’s my current goal and I’ve never sold a day in my life lmao. I’m tryna chase the bag any way possible and want to make the most out of the skills and potential I currently possess. I’m definitely going to keep track of my progress and implement the changes that need to be made. But what is a sign that I’m lacking in the areas that are needed to be successful in this market?

You've only been doing it 5 months.

You don't know what you don't know!

This is at least a good starting point. Never stop learning and refining your process.
Make sure that you have leadership (or will have leadership) that wants someone coachable - and also important that your manager is someone who has sold before and you can actually learn from them.

70K for BDR with 25K commission sprinkled in is high for a BDR pay. You should make sure that while you're in that role you can be learning how to do enterprise sales or at least sales practices in general so you can move into a closing role after 2 years tops.

I would stay and see if you can get the Enterprise AE role. once you get that role its much easier to move to a different company for a better enterprise role (if you need to do that)

Its much harder to move up from SMB then to midmarket then to ENT in my opinion.

Have you had the conversation internally about your path?

Be wary, especially if it’s a small company or small office. The jump from SDR to Enterprise AE is massive, SDR to SMB AE is much more realistic. I’ve seen top performing SDRs at companies that only sell to enterprise strung along for years. A company with more layers to move into and a proven career path would be a better bet.

Very massive. I'm seeing moves have been made here.
