Should KPIs be tracked?

I recently started at a job where KPIs (key performance indicators) aren’t tracked in any way. Every other job I’ve had, they track every call, email and activity you do throughout the day. Obviously this can come across as very micro-managey.

At my current job you’re treated like an adult with the boss looking for updates on deals, but never asking what I’ve gotten done for the day. I can’t see myself going back now to the old ways now, but I doubt I’ll ever find something similar. Thoughts?

Well, I mean... If the KPIs aren't being tracked, they aren't really KPIs.

There's a difference between tracking KPIs and micromanaging sales people over making 49 cold calls today instead of 50.

By definition, KPIs are tracked in some way, shape or form. How those KPIs are being leveraged is a different matter entirely but I would agree that no one wants to be confronted with activity metrics daily, nor is it an effective management strategy.

exacccctly how are those KPIs leveraged. As a manager we should be showing our reps, how to get to their number. If they get to their number on 10 dials and not 25, then great, talk about what 25 dials would actually do.

KPIs are nice to have to make sure your employees aren't fucking around. If they're hitting goals, it doesn't matter. If they aren't, it matters a lot.
