Should sales reps be allowed to take off after they reach their quota?

Wanted to hear everyone's thoughts on this! I feel like I totally understand that the goal of management is to have the sales floor produce and that some will hit their numbers and may need to exceed their quota capacity to make up for those who fall short. That said, I think it would also make sense for morale and burnout to give the opportunity to choose if you want to work extra once your quota is met. If I exceed my quota halfway through the month should I be required to work each day through the remainder of the day?

Thoughts?

1) I am guessing you do not get accelerators, but for the majority of us the higher above 100% you go, you get paid proportionally more - if anything I find myself working harder at that point.ย

2) You should use that time to build pipe to allow you to hit your NEXT month's target earlier, allowing you more time for # 1

3) My goal every year is to make club. To make club, not only do you have to hit your target, but for most companies you actually have to be in the top 10-20% of performers, just hitting 100% is not enough

4) If you are planning on moving up in the company, most sales leaders wouldn't want someone who checks out mentallyย

TL/DR, if given the option to keep working or check out, I would always continue to try and close more business.ย

Just my 2 cents.ย

Agreed with above... I love hitting early because in my head that just gives me a longer 'next' quarter and I can build extra pipe for the following quarters.

Our deals are long enough that you pretty much know what you have a good shot of closing for that particular quarter when it starts so finding inter-quarter deals are tough but as you said, once you hit then its full pedal to the metal for next q

Depends on the commission structure and where the rep is in their life cycle/priorities.ย

If you're grinding it out at the beginning of your career or in a new role/job - heck yeah, do that thing and get ahead!

Or if your company has accelerators... let's goooo!

But listen, if you're doing a side hustle or just kinda want to coast for a hot minute... I don't think we should conflate "hustle" or "going above and beyond" with morality/value.

In short - do it for you if you think it's worth it. Never do more than you have to if you don't. The company doesn't have your back in return.

I loved hitting 100% as early as possible because I could grind the rest of the month and make waaaaay more than a typical month.

There are merits to capped commission though. I knew guys who'd close 1 deal and spend the rest of the year on vacation.ย

People should take time off whenever they need it IMHO

Do you get a base salary? If the answer is yes, you answered your own question. Side note, hitting the quota is the minimum requirement the job, not the top bar.ย

Allowed? maybe, if you just want to be average and make average money to live an average life. Then sure go ahead.ย

If you are capped at 100% I can see where this would be nice, but with most companeis having some type of accelerators most would want to continue working. I also don't like to see people take their foot off the gas. many times reps will struggle the next FP if they do. Just my opinion.ย
