Should they have a sales major in colleges?

I know most universities do not have Sales as a major. Some have a minor or a class but not a full concentration.

Do you think it should be included or do you think it’s not necessary as the savages will find their way to SADNESS?

Sales as a college major?

I think once you professionalize sales like this, you open a dangerous road. This would kind of imply you need to eventually obtain a license of some sort to sell anything which is bullshit since there shouldn't be any barrier to entry to sell something (besides regulated products obviously) other than a will and desire to do so.

Nearly 60 in the US do, and I feel like schools are adding the program to their list all the time. However, I feel that sales is a mash-up of a bunch of majors such as Economics, Sociology, Marketing, Communications, etc. Each program lends skills to a well-rounded sales professional.

No, most of the best sales people I know either have no degree at all or a degree that has nothing to do with sales. I don't think someone should feel the need to pay tens of thousands of dollars for a sales education when they can become top performers simply by finding an employer with a great training/mentorship program, reading books, and getting their hands dirty while they grind it out.

I love that sales is a career that literally anyone can try regardless of socioeconomic status or book smarts.

Totally agree! I like the idea of having some sales classes for people to take who want to continue to advance their career but sales training is very similar.

The beauty of sales is that people from all backgrounds end up here and you don't need to invest thousands of $$ to be good

If Sustainability can be a major, sales definitely should be one.

A lot of schools will have a sales program, at least that's what our college had. It's technically not a sales degree, but more of an emphasis

If colleges have one, they're definitely gonna ruin it.

I would rather pay the same amount and learn from an accomplished salesperson rather than faculty at college.

Many major universities have this degree.

I think this creates a barrier to entry to a job that is already pretty cut throat.

Also, bums like me who didn't go to college, yet thrive in sales wouldn't even be offered an opportunity.

So… you’re gonna have a class room full of people calling on the same set of ass holes just saying no all day? 🤣 Look… I’ve seen this question 100 times. Sales skills are built over time and talking to people. Being told to fuck off and personal development, while chasing that cheddar. You’d have to ignore all your other classes in order to get good within 4 years lol However… this is a big however, if there was a course, each semester would require you to serve food, wash dishes, clean toilets, and work those shit jobs that teach you resilience and appreciation. I see too many entitled little shits come at me with a 4 year degree with zero work experience (not just zero sales) and expect the red carpet.

No, but a concentration in business psychology or HR inside of a Business degree would do wonders.

I think it´s the strenght of our field to collect all types of people from a lot of different walks of life and different college majors.

disclaimer that i'm well aware i don't have the answers to this and could be wrong - but i just don't think sales people are meant to be influencers. look at grant cardone for god sakes or collin cadmus offering fucking crypto advice on a linkedin poll. hard pass.

there's got to be a middle ground somewhere - but when corp has built a majority of this thing as satire, that should tell you a lot.
