Side Hustle or Doubling Down?

I recently had a conversation with a CRO at a fortune 500 compa... oh wait I'm not a LinkedIn schmuck my bad.

My friend and I were chopping it up about what to do about the immense uncertainty in the economy right now.

He argues that now is the time to start a side hustle, make sure you have outside income.

I argued that it would be better to double down on the job. Make sure you're a top performing rep so that when cuts come they don't come for you.

What is your take?

A side hustle takes focus away. If you have the time for it, that means that you should be either looking for a new job or seeing if you can make more money at your current job.

Side hustles are viable for so few people.

We're in sales, we can directly impact our income. Probably more than a side hustle would generate.

I think side hustles are like tattoos - if there's something you've always wanted/you identify a great opportunity, go for it. Don't decide you want a tattoo/side hustle and look for something that could work.

I selected Side Hustle because its always good to look at options and if you can pick up a nights/weekends thing, go for it.

Depends on the side gig and what it is. Run a rental company on the weekends with family. I also put in a ton of hours at my current role

I immediately thought of you and your side hustle as one that makes sense.

Way too many don't

I agree with everything being said on both sides, I think my friend's point was that even if you're a top performer, you might get let go regardless. Plus with the way the job market is you might be goin 6 months without an income.
I'm on the side of job first but just thought I'd clarify/ add reasoning on his end.

Some great points being made, and I've gone back and forth on it myself over the years.
I think the side hustle needs to be fun for me to do it! Something that doesn't distract from the main job, but always nice to bring in more cash.

I picked side hustle but only to the point where it isnt a huge exhausting burnout type situation. Nothing wrong with a non-competing activity if its fun and easy and doesnโ€™t negatively impact your main hustle, or family life etc
