Since we all love to talk about layoffs......Salesforce

looks like the "holy grail" for may sales ppl is not immune to laying people off.

When i see stuff like this, where these huge companies lay off ppl its just another example to ALWAYS PUT YOURSELF FIRST.

The only person you should be loyal to is your self and your fam.

Dont put companies on pedestals because then they can only disappoint you.

Protocol Magazine reports that up to 2,500 employees could eventually be affected by the job cuts.

Salesforce too?! Oh dear.

And you're VERY right - you gotta take care of numero uno, ALWAYS.

Hope it doesn't impact @abupapi's chances with his transition to sales

As always, everyone's doing what everyone's doing. There's FOMO in hiring. There's FOMO in firing. Such a sad state of affairs.

Salesforce had been claiming sales layoffs are "performance related" when I read about it yesterday. Not sure how true that is, but a few individuals had related that they had missed for a quarter or two and got let go.

It's one way to reduce a team.

Mind you, I'm not saying it's right. The positive here is, unless we learn differently, they are getting fairly generous packages.

This is pretty accurate (source: co-selling as a partner with SF AEs).
They hired fast with fewer hoops during COVID and ended up with some talent issues at AE and RVP, especially the down-market teams. Anyone getting cut from sales roles will likely be addition by subtraction. Some pretty brutal performances during deal cycles over the past year cost their SE, CS and VP teams (and me) a lot of wasted time and effort.

i wonder if COVID has any effect on this. many companies did terrible and went out of business but many thrived as well. I wonder if Salesforce saw that and just thought what ever uplift they were getting was going to last longer

They probably got what they wanted out of the hiring binge. Market penetration by reps hungry to make quota, doing outreach to companies that would have been passed on because they're not low hanging fruit and slow to make decisions and/or not exactly the ideal ICP. The education and efforts around those companies has been done and the market is saturated, so they now have too many reps.

These short term hiring/firing cost companies a lot more than they like to admit. For example in my company it takes a new sales person 8-12 months to close a sales, assuming they start from nothing. If they fire a guy at month 7, you restart the clock.

Every time they pay external candidates more for the same role they refuse to pay internal reps - and those internal reps leave to earn more $$ elsewhere - it also costs them. And yet this same process has been going on for years and they refuse to consider retention a valid, cost savings, strategy.

so true. I really have NO IDEA why companies cant figure this out. its not hard to see.

Case and point:

i was at one comapny and found out they are paying my coworker $35K more to do the same job.

when i brought it up they wouldnt budge.

went looking else where and found a company that would pay me that exact amount!

I went to my current company and told them, they offered me only $10k more than what i was making.

now they are coming back to me asking me to return after not being able to find a good fit. and its FOR SURE going to cost them hahah.....if i take it.

That's right - and even had they found someone, they'd have to onboard (even HR onboarding costs $$) and then ramp up/knowledge exchange. All of that costs them more than that $35K they declined to give you.

At my previous company, we called the returning reps boomerangs.

Loyalty is a two-way street...but most companies don't realize this. They expect their employees to be blindly loyal...never leave...and if they do leave, give 2+ weeks notice and train their replacement. Those same companies wont think twice, if push comes to shove, to let you go with no warning in order to maintain operating margin and not disappoint shareholders.

The earlier you learn that there really is no loyalty to employees, the better off you will be. It's ok to enjoy your job and the place you work, but always do what's best for you - they will show zero loyalty to you when they look at budgetary spreadsheets and decide where to make cuts.

It went pretty well. He pointed out that the ideal position would be SDR since I do not have any experience with cold calling and outbound prospecting. But he said the competencies are there. He also mentioned that he has to talk to the hiring manager, who has to talk to finance. I aced it with what I had and answered his questions well.

What works against me is my experience in sales.

The thing is, they must have hired a lot thinking they could acquire customers at the same rate they did during covid. But then they might have realized it was not gonna last after covid. So Im guessing some sales, marketing and HR roles are getting the bye-bye and maybe R&D and support.

That's why I hate the state of today's markets, only looking short term - quarterly profits and view people as disposable. Simon Sinek did a great job at highlighting this in his book, The Infinite Game. There needs to be a mindset shift but it won't happen, the Street is too entrenched in these companies. VC's are no better, let me be clear about that too.

This layoff at Salesforce is made bigger than it actually is. They have 78K employees and are looking to fire about 1000. Given that an average churn rate in tech is somewhere between 10% to 15% on an annual basis - meaning Salesforce would have already have 7.800 people leaving on an annual basis or 650 monthly, this is just business as usual. They will move people around and ask some unlucky individuals to leave Salesforce. In our region - Netherlands- nobody has been asked to leave the company.
