"Sorry Mr. Customer - This Is Above My Paygrade"

This phrase really grinds my gears.

When I hear this from someone, what I actually hear is them saying "I have no interest in increasing my own paygrade". This is such a cheap way out of a potential conflict.

Grow some balls and make it a part of your paygrade, then maybe you can increase your paygrade!!

Is it just me or do you agree?

I hear it from technicians quite frequently.ย
The product and service I sell relies on technicians to install equipment and often times they decide something is "above their paygrade".

I've only heard this used as a joke..."I don't make the federal rules for insurance, that's above my paygrade," that kind of thing. I can't imagine using it in a serious discussion.

I donโ€™t specifically say โ€œabove my pay grade,โ€ but sometimes I use this to get more information out of a prospect when theyโ€™re asking for the world and I know they arenโ€™t the final decision maker and I can create a bond over being middlemen. โ€œYou have to get this approved from people above you who passed down a list of requirements, just like I have to make a case to get you x/y/z with finance/etc. Whatโ€™s most important to getting the deal done and we can work on that together.โ€ Usually gets them to tell me the one thing thatโ€™s actually needed to cross the finish line and grab a guarantee from them in the process, โ€œif I do this can we expect a purchase?โ€

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
I say something's above my paygrade when it's an internal or partner conflict and I just want out of that discussion.

Itโ€™s annoying and unprofessional. Should point them in the right direction instead of deflecting.
