Sr. BDR trying to break into an AE role

I've been a BDR for the last 2 1/2 years at the current company I'm at. Was passed up for an AE promotion since leadership only promoted 2 internally out of 7 that interviewed including myself. Was acquired by a bigger company so that changed up internal processes. I feel like I'm rotting away in my current position. Leadership isn't the most transparent in terms of growth plans, just the old "we're evaluating and will keep you posted" talk to keep people from jumping ship.

I've had a few interviews for AE roles at other companies, but they all passed on me in late stages of the interview process. I have closing experience but not in software and I feel companies could care less which to me is BS especially if I closed deals. Didn't know transitioning into SaaS would be so complicated.

How can I get AE experience when my current company is dragging their feet and other companies are not willing to take a shot?

Has anyone been in this situation? How did you go about it?

Sounds like you should work on your closing in interviews. Remember, the company needs you. They have a problem (the open position) and you are the solution. Why do they need you and why do they need you now?

I've actually done a pretty good job of that. I always ask hiring managers at the end of the interview, "based on what you've heard today is there any reason why you wouldn't hire me?" Its a great litmus test as well to see where I stand.

Great for clarification, not a closing statement ๐Ÿ˜‰

One example: If you hire me I will focus on xyz for the first 60 days so I can get ramped up quickly and start to contribute to the bottom line.

Come up with a plan to present to the hiring managers on how you would manage your territoy/accounts. Show that you have a strategy and have prepared yourself to be successful as an AE.
