Stalking your teammates #’s

I recently built out a report where I can only see MY monthly numbers to quota.

Let me tell you guys, it is life changing. I realized half of my sadness and anxiety was coming from looking at what everyone else was doing.

Listen, I'm as competitive as they come, and I love winning. But at the end of the day, I can only control my number and no one else's. And it's even more frustrating chasing after more tenured reps with a book of business 3 times the size of yours.

Known your quota, do what you gotta do to hit it, and don't give a Fuck about what anyone else is doing.

Agree or disagree?

So, I consider myself a golfer.  And by that I mean I own golf clubs, shoes and a sleeve or two of balls.  One thing I especially enjoy is going out on a Sunday morning and golfing with some random people.  Guy, girl, old, young, pro, amateur... doesn't matter.

Every week on the tee I come across someone who bombs drives, seeks every pin and putts like a pro.  It's easy to get distracted by their performance but I don't.  I find that I'm happy for them and the level of their game but I focus on my game and, in reality, the only person I have to beat is me.  They have nothing to do with me and the outcome of my round.

Was the exact analogy I was going to use.

This analogy is amazing. Also because I often tell myself that tenured reps are playing with a full set of clubs and I’m out there slapping it around with a driver, 7 iron, and putter. Thank you!

You could do a lot of damage with a 7 iron and a putter if you play smart...

Completely agree.

There's a great Jordan Peterson lecture about this concept which essentially says: "Don't compare yourself to anyone else, because you're not seeing the whole picture. The best comparison is to you, yesterday." Or something to that effect.

I choose to look at it as just improve 1% over yesterday.

But beating that person works too. Until you wake up hungover lol.

Fair enough.

Although, the best thinkers have always explored... alternative states of mind.

Have to be able to look at the concept from multiple perspectives to really think on it.

Totally agree. I've deliberately never looked at my colleagues numbers from day 1.

I'll send a congrats when I see a closed won notification in slack, but I would be in a bad place if I was constantly monitoring other people's results. At the end of the day I let my manager decide where I sit in the stack

I agree with this for most people, but just to take the opposite side for a sec, some people are fueled by seeing their name in the middle of the stack and it brings out the best in them.

I have 2 AE's on my team that are absolutely fueled by this. They seek it out and when things are aligned how they want, they go into overdrive and deals start flowing. Its not for everyone but it can certainly drive a certain type of person.

My biggest competition is yesterday's me. I agree. Never forget that comparison is the thief of joy.

Yep. I read that a few years ago and it clicked for me that a lot of anxiety and unhappiness was watching the board. Be happy for others but focus on myself. Not always easy in sales

Agree.   Focus on what you can control.

For the first time in  a long while, I'm on a very small team, so it's not possible to avoid what's going on, but the good part is that we're on track as a team to be successful.  How that helps me?  My manager is pretty relaxed, and not stressed about the target.   That means proactive assistance rather than a helicopter boss, and that is excellent.

Agree. When you’re on the losing end of inequitable territories/BoBs best to just track your own numbers. When I’ve had better territories in the past and am up toward the top of the leaderboard though I’m looking all the time and using it as motivation to push way past quota.

I'm guilty of this, I do check and it annoys me when I see I am working hard whilst others are doing fuck all. Probably should stop, would make my day less painful.

I agree that focusing on just my numbers is better, this help me focus on myself and my goals. Looking at other peoples numbers gives me anxiety about not hitting numbers and goals. It also is different for each person based on the region and type of sector they are calling so I realized that it is not fair to compare myself to others on my team. I found that I am better able to focus on myself and hit my goals and not have to worry about how many others are getting.

I find it funny when people come up to me and comment on my pipeline or KPI's. I really do not give to much attention to things that aren't padding my pipeline or earning me some commish.

I'm sooo guilty of looking at my teammate's numbers often but it doesn't necessarily hurt me mentally because I'm typically at the top. It does however make me question WTF some of my colleagues are thinking when they complain to me about not hitting their numbers- I tend to think keeping an eye on our team is necessary because I can hold them accountable to doing their job. Yes, I know I'm not the manager (I don't even want to be at this stage in my career) and don't need to but I'm a natural leader.

Ugh I'm so guilty of stalking my team's calenders and numbers. It is a good feeling when I'm at the top, but makes me feel like shit when I see something big brewing in my teammates' pipeline. Absolutely not worth it at all, it's a habit that needs to be kicked!! Comparing is a terrible disease so good for you for building out reporting that gives you what you need without seeing other's numbers.

Great way to maintain focus and control the controllables. In the end, none of it will impact you.

I have been guilty of tracking those pretty closely towards EoY when I've been at the top of the ranks, just to see/make sure I maintain that lead.

I feel like I'm alone in enjoying seeing not only my team but every AE's numbers at my company.

It's motivating on a team basis and calming as a whole - but this may be a leadership/culture thing.

I see some of our top performers sitting at 20% but still getting support and not abuse.

@DatSaaS I have the same report and its life changing. I could not give a FUUUUHHHHK about others numbers. Happy for them when they win, and I will talk shit when they are down. But it doesn't change a damn thing about what I do everyday. My EOM/EOQ/EOY numbers speak for themselves.

I just sit in the end of quarter meeting now like "Are you not entertained?!?!?"

I completely agree. The best competition is beating yourself and your own expectations/ past reformable. Worrying about others can just cause you to behave in ways you wouldn’t because you’re not focused on your process and your objectives.
