Start Up Recommendations

Good day folks! Seeking your input and recommendation. I've work for medium to large organizations for most of my sales career and recently started to have an itch for making a move to a promising Start Up.

Would love to get insight on promising Start Ups to look more into?

A lot of people around here aren't fans of start ups, but I think there can be a lot of benefits, depending on what you're looking for.

What's pulling you that way?

I think Im probably one of the people you are referring to here (if not my B for having an ego lol) because I have been vocal against it in the past.

I want to make a distinction between not being a fan of startups and treading cautiously before moving to one. I currently work for a "startup". It was series A when I started and we raised series B about 6 months ago. Its been the best move of my career and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

What I have been vocal against is just moving to a "startup" on a whim or without doing your HW. Most Startups are going to fail. They are going to be disorganized, often lack product market fit/clear direction, and understanding of who their ICP is and their leadership often leaves a lot to be desired.

Now if you can find a startup that does not have the issues I just outlined, Im all for it. You can change your life and have an insane impact on the company. Just be careful that youre not being sold a load of shit by a recruiter or founder.

most ppl on here aren't big on them. But, the best company I've ever worked for is a start up. I love it.

If you need structure, it's not for you. If you thrive in chaos and wearing multiple hats. You'll do well at a start up.

The leadership of said startup makes all the difference.

Fair question. I'll sum it up to these 3, no particular order:

1) Help grow something and have greater influence on direction
2) Chance to build and lead sales team
3) Potential for even greater financial reward, ie equity (understanding this can also never prove true)

See my response to Jefe on how to evaluate a good one. Look for product market fit. Do they have a good product that solves a real problem that people are already buying.

Do their leaders have a sound understanding of their business and do they show strong leadership traits.

Are you ready to take on a lot more than just selling/running a sales team because you will in a startup.

I dont have a list to go to but those are the things I would look for as you are evaluating.

Last thing would be to take your time. I moved to my current startup because my head of sales at my prior job asked me to join. She had vetted 50+ companies before this one. Thats the type of effort and discipline you should have when looking for a good one.

Do you have a network you can tap for this as well? People with whom you used to work who have gone to a startup, or are entrepreneurial enough to have started their own?

It can be an asymmetrical bet if you really believe they will make it. The only way forward is equity.
