Start your own company?

Is it true that all sales people want to start their own company at some point?

And if so, would you want to go VC backed route, bootstrapped, or a lifestyle business?

Also if so, what are you waiting for?

Do you plan to start your own company at some point?

I'm certainly keeping that door open but when, where, and what I would do, no idea.

That has been me forever. I am trying to research areas/industries I can sell into on my own without quitting my current job. I WFH about 50% of the time, so if I can find something to tie into my day-to-day routine.. emails/phone... I want the side hustle.

In your case that makes total sense and you should pursue the side hustle. I don't have that luxury just yet with my time.

I feel the same, I'm curious if that's most of us sales people.

I've been reading Super Founders by Ali Tamaseb. First section is slow but after that it's pretty interesting. Some good tidbits on how founders are able to pick a group or vertical they want to be in and then go figure out what to build.

I guess it's kind of like writing songs, do you do the instruments or lyrics first? There's a lot of companies with poor market fit and I can't help but wonder if it's because they picked the vertical they wanted to be in and the product they're trying to sell is like making the wrong puzzle piece fit. The company I work for was started from an identified need in a vertical instead of choosing the vertical first and we're prospering as a result.

No marketing, mayo isn't an MQL
Not against it, but need to have an idea I believe in until then happy to just upskill and learn widely.

I’ve had my own company for 10+ years. Trying to work for someone else for a change rn.

Being the boss has its downsides, though. You’re gonna have to work 17x harder than anyone else and if anything goes wrong - it’s entirely your fault. You also need to have so many different skillsets - marketing, sales, management, legal, accounting, customer service….. EVERYTHING.

I think it’s why I’m doing well where I’m at now, because I’ve been there and can see the bigger picture, how what I sell will help their bottom line, save them headache, blah blah

Maybe? Certainly not in the industry I’m in now. That would make no sense.

I could see doing it again in my old one, but only after I had enough personal wealth to not need a high return and definitely on a smaller scale. I’d also be open to new opportunities where I felt like there was a high probability of success and a high rate of return. I’m pretty good at running things.

Be your own boss! I work for this company that allows you to bring on your own associates. Within 6 months you could have an entire team working for you! I can sign you up as one of my senior associates today.

I don't want to ever worry about payroll and cash flows for others. I'd work for someone, never for self. I'm a simp like that.

Respect that. Sometimes I look at my founders and am just glad I don't have their level of stress. But that desire to build/have my own thing always creeps back in...

I desperately want to purchase a large plot of land on the Central Coast of California and open a winery/ legal cannabis grow operation. That said, I am not rich and would never want to be at the mercy of investors so.. retirement dream?

I did it when I was 25 and ran that shit for 17 years, financial strain of the pandemic killed it and then I became a corporate sales savage. As much as I enjoy the whole steady paycheck, not thinking about work 24/7, cheap and good healthcare… I will rise again! 👊👊👊

What makes you want to try again so bad? Your listed pros of just being a sales savage look pretty attractive...

Not for me.  I enjoy not being on call all day, every day.   As an IC, some things are simply someone else's problem...and that's fine with me.

Currently a founder in a small bootstrapped startup. It isn’t for the faint hearted especially if you have a partner that knows nothing about sales and isn’t naturally competitive. Ideally I’d like to move into a small startup that’s investment backed and help build that out from nothing.

I actually prefer to be a w2 employee. Many have told me I should be running my own ship, but I’ve just always preferred to have the consistency.

I have and actively run it alongside my full-time job. I’d you’re not an organized person (Yo), it’s incredibly difficult, as some days you’ll literally put down a laptop after a demo and then grab another laptop to start selling for your business. It’s tough.

I'd like to, but don't really have anything yet that I feel strongly enough about to make happen.

Already did almost 10 years ago and still running it while working as an employee for a large corporation. I can't really say it's a company in the formal sense, it's just me and a bunch of collaborators. Each one has their own thing as well but we partner when needed. We were not looking to grow this in the past and we are not yet, it's good enough to keep it going and bring some serious income without dreaming big. I like where it's headed :)

I've started my own a couple times, scary shit but you learn a lot and tend to value the stability of a paycheck.

I like working for someone else since it minimizes your responsibility to only selling, but if you sell your company, you can make way more money.

I'm trying to find a micro-saas or something to start/buy and expand it using the skills I'm learning from my day job.
