Started your sales career in this year?

That's it. I stop just applying for sales jobs now. Now it's time to work smart.

Instead of just hoping to land on a Interview by just applying to jobs, I want to ask someone who has done what I want. Got the job they wanted.

I would like to ask you guys how exactly you landed on a sales job as a fresher. I have some questions which I want to ask someone.

I would be really grateful if someone is open to lending me their 5 minutes to talk about it. It could save me hours of roaming around.

Would you be open to it?

Got my first gig by asking some intelligent questions at college career fair.

All other jobs have been via applying with a strong resume, then later tapping into my personal network.

Tough to coordinate without DM's in the War Room, but I'm sure most savages would be happy to share.

I went straight into B2B sales (AE in financial services) the Monday after I finished my post-grad in marketing management.

Do your research, tailor your resume, and ask the right questions.

How did you find that first job? Was it a standard job board, a university career placement, a referral, or something else?

went from private telecom development (5 years) to sales with no experience. Hired last Jan and when asked why they should hire me over the other dude they interviewed with more experience I told them my personality and outgoing-ness would help me immensely and that I also thrive off a more fast paced work environment/work... part of the reason why I left telecoms(lots of waiting for permits and shit to get passed by HOAs,FAA,BOS etc)

also, find something you want to sell and not something you're being forced to shove down peoples throats or you may get tired of that job real quick

Head Of Sales
I got my first job by going into an industry that was desperate for ppl. insurance.

i got my first role in Saas as an SDR by finding a few companies i wanted to work for

connected with a LOT of their SDRs on linked in

messaged them all saying " hey im really interested in joing X company as an SDR would you be open to sharing your experience?"

talked with a few ppl. Like what I heard.

Then I would ask them "do you have any connections to the hiring manager? could you help me get an introduction?"

some did some didnt.

the one that did, coached me through the whole process.

Many years ago, I slid sideways into a sales role.  It was unintentional, unplanned, and completely serendipitous.  Not sure that I'd recommend my path for anybody who actually likes to plan their future, though.

Not sure what you're looking for exactly.  I have ALWAYS been in sales (ever since I was 8 selling door to door Scout-a-rama tickets).

Post-college I got my first job just answering a ad for the position.  From there I got a job working for a small software company my FIL was at (which ended poorly), and then I got a job through a networked referral through my Dad (he knew a guy who knew a guy...).

Small business payroll sales. It’s a grind but taught me a lot. Also got me in an AE role basically from the start. Of course you have to do full cycle sale so you pretty much do the grunt work of a BDR/SDR plus running the full sales process but small biz was pretty quick sales cycle. Most of these are kind of toxic and competitive work environments so idk if I’d really recommend but they do usually have great training programs!

advice i got was build your resume / cut your teeth selling door to door for 6 months.
it’s a hustle, 100% commission, but can be damn lucrative. plus it’s just about summer so 🤷🏼‍♂️.

then take that experience to a SaaS SDR role - you’ll be lethal. put your head down and hit your numbers, the promotions will come quicker than you’d think.

Read the Academy on the left.
Write up questions that you want to know about a company.
Go research companies on Crunchbase.
Find people who work there on linkedin and get time with them to see if the company is shit or not.
Call/email/text/message the hiring manager or sales manager about why they should hire you.
Close all the way through.
Be careful about red flags (lots of good posts on this).

Glassdoor and Repvue can help but take with a grain of salt.

Personally, I had luck with a recruiter, but they were one in 100 that were actually helpful.

If all else fails then try to start as an SDR/BDR/ADR (sales dev rep, business dev rep, account dev rep) and work your way up. You can advance incredibly quickly in saas. Within 1 year you could be in a closing role, but it would likely take some climbing. If you have some experience in professional services then I would shoot for an AE (closing role) though. My start was cold calling to source ~10k deals to small businesses right out of college with an English degree and terrible grades. You'll land one!
