Starting my onboarding process at a new company today, what's your best advice to me for the next 2 weeks?

I'm starting today as a new BDR and this is my second time around an onboarding process for a software company, and I want to maximize my potential from the get-go, that's why I want your top 3 advice from the savages that frequent here.

I know Big Meech had created a blog of his onboarding process to which I'll read again and take down my notes from it, buuuuuuut, for some reason I can't find his profile. If anyone can help that'd be awesome.

I'll do some documenting myself to add on to the library, but your advice is welcome :)

Heyย @CoorsKing, I had a question in regards to the meetings you set up with marketing and backend support and all that. I understand you work remotely as I do how did you approach these people?

Highly suggest reading "The First 90 days". I go for broke and try to go 1x1's with anyone who will give time. A very powerful question to ask is: If you were me, what would you focus on?

Ask about weird to outsiders but common in this new role objections that are specific to your product. Having those under your belt will help.

I'll start doing that as soon as I get to shadow people, thank you!

It's going to depend on how you best learn but for me that's getting on the phones as soon as possible. I can read and listen to trainings all day every day but nothing really starts to stick until I'm applying it. Make calls, fail fast learn fast. Experience is the best teacher.

I agree, I think through getting my hands dirty is how I learn best but still, I think there are things that go further on beyond just dialing that can make or break my stay at the new company ya know?

a couple people have said it, but ask questions and try and listen in on as much as you can. Also, maybe seek someone out who moved from your role to an AE role and figure out what was important to their success

I'm going to that, they actually said in the interview that their plan is to ramp me up to AE within the year, so doing that will definitely work for that trajectory.

Aside from the obvious stuff like making sure to absorb everything & ask questions, I'm a big fan of shadowing during onboarding. The role plays that you might do are nice and all but you never know what an actual call is going to go like, so shadowing as many calls & meetings as you can will be so helpful in the long run.ย

I'll be doing shadowing sometime tomorrow I hope. They told me to focus on my onboarding training for today and listen in to some call recordings at the end of the day.

Do you have any onboarding plans set-up by your company?ย

I would always take my time to learn more about teammates who I will be working with (directly and indirectly), focus of strengthening my product knowledge (website, confluence page etc.) and get more into shadowing calls with both SDR and AE to understand the entire sales cycle, Get on weekly 1*1 with my AE and Manager both. This would be step 1.ย

They actually didn't mention any plans per se, yesterday was a day of getting credentials to work, and while I waited to have certain problems fixed, I watched videos from previous demos and met up with the team to introduce myself. I think today will be much different though.

Awesome, all the best!

Make sure you take notes of everything you find important, save links etc. Always better to have your own SOP you can refer to.

I'm glad I'm an avid note-taker. I used to do Spanish to English interpreting and taking notes was just as important as knowing the context of the conversation. This helped me also with my memory skills, anyway, this is great advice!ย
