Stay or Go?

Hi Savages,

I have a great opportunity with a disruptor in my industry with a huge series A already under their belt. It would be right in line with what I do and have done in the past. My question is should I feel bad about leaving if I am already booked to attend 5 conferences for my current company between now and the middle of March? I sort of feel guilty about leaving them, but this would be a great opportunity. I would definitely also have to pay the company back for the airfares they have paid for on my expense account. Pay is roughly the same with a better upside at the new opportunity.

Why would you have to pay the airfares?    Aren't they working through a booking agency that kicks back credit for unused airfare?

No @Sunbunny31, we use our own credit card to book and they reimburse us 2 days after expense submission.  So I use a card that racks up miles for the booking and pay it off every month.  It has funded some nice trips over the years.

Oof.  So with this new company, I no longer have a company card and am using my own for travel as well, but am booking through Concur.   I may just be finding out about reimbursement, as our SKO might be cancelled, and that's what I've booked.  :/

But...sounds like you pay them back, cancel the trips, and sit on a bunch of airline credit - right?

Right, I will be sitting on a ton of credits, but with the new job, I will likely be attending a few of the same conferences.  so I might be able to use the airfares.  I just know that I am the only one at my current company that knows anything about the segment that I am in.  So while they could fill my slot at the conference with a body, it won't yield the same results.

There should be a way out if you would no longer be associated with the org. Did you read the confluence or asked your finance team about it?

Don’t feel guilty, you are always replaceable. Sounds like you’re excited about the future with the new company, I’d take the leap! I’d you good relationships, they should understand and want you to move forward and upward.

What are the people at the disruptor like?  And the people at your current role?  Where can you see you succeeding best?   Just like the company you currently work for employs you for their success, you should be ready to move for your own success but if you are happy already you need to be darn sure the new place is going to satisfy you and give you that opportunity to move up.

I agree, @sketchysales.  Therein lies my dilemma.  I really like the company I work for.  I am also friends with the new company's employees.  We are often at the same conferences and we hang out a lot while at the conferences.  I don't see culture being a big obstacle.

If you are thinking about leaving, you are already gone.

A company would fire you with no thought, don't feel bad they can't get some conference fee back. Hell, they will just write it off anyway.

I would 100% refuse a clawback of any expenses. It's fuckin omicron season man, no one should be forced to go anywhere.

Don't feel guilty, but you should feel some type of way about having to get a clawback on expenses.
