๐Ÿ›‘ Stay Put or Explore Options? ๐Ÿ”ญ I NEED YOUR ADVICE

Wassup Savages - I could really use some advice here.

I have been in SaaS now for a little over 4 years and have consistently moved up and bounced around a bit because I wasn't either given what I deserved or the company was terrible.

Now I am at a company I like, that is ready to raise their last round before an exit. I took a pay cut to come here since my last place was a nightmare. On a short year coming in at the same time as 2 others, I have CRUSHED IT. I am at quota already, with an extra month left (fiscal year).

I should be making anywhere between 30-70k MORE than I am on my current OTE and don't think they will give me a raise coming up on my 1 year in Feb.

I like my boss, my VP is dope, I have built some good internally relational equity but I am just underpaid.

My buddy works at a start-up where I would see that 30-70K uptick in OTE, the company is starting to really take off and is Series B in a growing market.

What would you do in my situation?

You may have changed your name but your infatuation with emojis will always give you away.ย

I say ride it out through exit and then shop around.ย

Stay put. No need to leave a team of leaders that you enjoy working for. If you are truly performing then your numbers will speak for you at raise time, and you'll be seen as an asset to the org as you move into an exit phase.

It sounds like you're already leaning one way, and you want external validation for your decision.

Personally, I'd say go - you won't get an internal raise that matches external offers.ย

I am leaning more towards staying tbh but am looking to hear my fellow savages opinions so that I can get a broader perspective

What does your buddy tell you about the management, resources, etc., at the start-up?ย  ย  Will you be successful there, or is it another situation like the others you mentioned?ย  ย

The company is still smaller and the team is still small. He has done well in the first year there and 2 other newer AE's have gotten off to a good start in their ramp. So overall he says there is a good amount of opportunity to be hadย

With good support and management?ย  ย Basically, to replace the things you enjoy about your current job, with the added benefit of exceptional additional money?

It sounds as though you should follow the money and make the move, based on the info.

Just tell them you are starting to get more job offers and debating starting to test the waters. Just say you are wondering if they plan to take care of you next year and shut your mouth and let them talk.
They will instantly show you the value you bring to the org. If they donโ€™t offer you more almost immediately, I think you have your answer.
Iโ€™m in similar situation. Almost 200% to goal and was passed over for promotions by people below me doing less sales.
I expect a 15k bump or I am OUT. (Iโ€™m top rep at company).

This is good. Iโ€™ve never thought of telling my boss. Because it is the truth. Weโ€™ll see how he handles it.

Just make sure that you got few months living expenses saved up at minimum and be ready for war.
I feel telling truth and transparency is what they value and gives them a chance to make things better sooner rather than after you spent HOURS interviewing, just to stay put.
But in my case Iโ€™ve seen huge pay bumps by being top performer at almost all spots Iโ€™ve worked.
Hereโ€™s a tip.. if you are one of top performers or the top, they NEED you, especially if itโ€™s not a huge sales team.
They have goals too.

I would not leave if I am happy with the company, work, team and all the resources.

Interested in finding out what you've decided to do.ย  I was leaning toward moving, until PBC pointed out that you should stay through exitย  - which is a solid recommendation.ย

how do you determine what you "should" be making out of curiosity?ย  why did you join this company and take a paycut?ย  was it a change of role that brought down your OTE? OTE is a misnomer.ย  if you like where you are at, they know you took a cut to come there and you are doing well, ask for a base and variable raise to get you to market value for the role.ย  if you are asking for more than market value for the role, thats a diff story

IF you hold shares and an Exit is 100% happening then I'd ride it out because those shares could be worth well over that 30-70k which is a big range as well.ย

While itโ€™s okay to be happy with where youโ€™re at, never turn down a call with another company. You donโ€™t have to be actively looking to find another good opportunity
