Strengths & Weaknesses **DISCUSSION**

Hey All,

What are some of your personal strengths that help you succeed professionally? Weaknesses? How are you working on your weaknesses?

Let's share our struggles as well as our success.

I'll go first:

Strengths—Generally a motivated morning person, I get a lot done in the early working hours. I am very detail-oriented and relationships focused.

Weaknesses—Afternoons are a drag and I lose motivation quickly. I am not always the most organized on the office end of my work and scheduling, and I often find myself scrambling to play catch up. Currently I am working on this by leaving my work calendar up at the end of each day, that way it is the first thing I see when I start my next morning with some motivation..

Strengths - Standing my ground, believing in my value & having a constant motor. Anyone can fill a seat and complete a process, but value additions can make demands of the company. I've always said, "I deserve X, pay me or find someone who isn't as good at this and suffer the consequences. You're not paying me a salary you're making an investment in your company." The motor equals success. Showing up day after day is the key to success.

Weaknesses - I struggle to stay focused. I have spurts of productivity that surpass most people's 8 hour days, but if I could get on the rails for 8 hours at a time I would be a much better contributor. I wish I had that ability. I am envious of people who can focus for long periods of time. They have an advantage over me.

Also have similar weakness. It's good that to know that about ourselves so we can better allocate our time and maybe insert designated breaks throughout the day. It's hard to imagine anyone to be productive all 8 hours - that's so mentally draining.

Thanks for sharing. We share that weakness. I can get hyper-productive bursts in, but then I sit on my hands for an hour. I try to work on it, but have never been too successful.

I always found that when I'm sitting on my hands, it helps to put your thumbs up. Butt stuff gets me motivated again.

Master of Disaster
Strengths - I give no fucks and have no fear. It really helps projecting confidence into being direct enough to get what you want. I temper this with some humor, but deep down I'm an ultra nerd who needs to be the expert and will spend every waking hour learning what I need to be the best. You can't outwork me.

Weaknesses - I talk too damned much. Also, my ADD is off the charts and its super annoying. Organizing things legit gives me anxiety because I make my own systems which make sense in my head but none to anyone else. It is entirely unproductive and I wish I was better at it.

Strengths - not afraid to say or hear no. When I am on productivity wise...I am ON. Never afraid to ask questions. Organized.

Weaknesses - Like almost everyone has said so far...when I am not focused I am all over the place, especially in the afternoons. I fly through my to-do list in the morning then find myself bouncing all over the place

Strengths: Getting shit done in a timely and efficient manner. If you assign me something, I don't need to be told twice or need follow ups. And it's done in a way where things are organized, thoughtful, and a high quality of standard. I don't like to fail or be seen as anything less than exceptional.

Weakness: Conflict avoider. I like to think everyone else can perform at the same level of standards, but that's not the case. It's my innate personality to get along well with others, easy going, and a peacemaker (enneagram type 9 haha). This is not helpful as a manger/leader as I need to be direct to make my team better.

Solutions Engineer
Strengths - I am one of the best demo-ers in terms of understanding flow, solution, and energy you have ever worked with. It has always come naturally to me, and it's a big part of my success as an SE. People like me and trust me very quickly. I am also very good at looking at lots of little pieces of things (integrations, product stacks, APIs) and understanding how they fit in the "big picture".

Weaknesses - I absolutely hate busy work or being forced to do things that I believe are stupid. This gets me into trouble in sales cultures like my current one where it is an ego echo chamber - it is very hard for me to be a grunt and sometimes I have to work really, really hard to put my own ego aside and just do dumb shit because it was told I had to do it. I am still working on it, I call it "swimming the moat."

In a minimal approach:

Strength - Humour and being able to chat to anyone and make them feel comfortable and laugh - the clown I guess.

Weakness - Not knowing when is right or wrong to say certain things to boss's. By that I mean when you have an idea but the time isn't right so you never say. Anxiety, I guess, Actually.

Ok lot of relatable stuff here. What is it that gets the rapid-work-style/ADD people into sales?

S: Direct, Rapid work style (GSD when I'm on), Competitive without losing rapport (good for other sales guys), Big picture so get called on for strategy stuff all the time.

W: Crash and burn work style. Go hard out then will do nothing exploring the depths of the War Room. Get distracted by "shiny objects" and lose focus on the stuff I know works too easily. Hate the mundane. Also can be anti-social, despite being highly extroverted, normally plays out by avoiding senseless meetings, not replying to chain emails or posting in company wide teams channels,

Working on them?: time block and try to work with energy lulls. and try to turn the lows into "games" where I can compete, e.g. mini call blitz in afternoons.
Always tweaking productivity systems to maximise focus.
I have "catch-up days" where I do all the things like wish Barbara in finance happy birthday for 3 weeks ago, do internal surveys, etc.
